March Recap
March has flown by! We've been busy, busy, busy! In science, we finished up our Mixtures and Solutions unit with a trip to Yorkton. We visited the Western Development Museum, which included exploring stations set up by SaskEnergy dealing with heating and cooling our houses and buildings. We then toured the Water Treatment Plant in Yorkton to discover how our drinking water is treated before it ends up in our taps. Math has us starting our algebra and graphing unit, which includes many hands-on puzzles and activities. We had the wonderful opportunity to head out ice fishing with the grade 8s - what a fun morning! Finally, we have been busy setting up a small business with our school vending machine. Students have been put into small teams to represent marketing, finance, inventory, and HR. Well done kids!
January Recap
It's been a busy first month of 2023! We have been listening to the read aloud of "Harris and Me" by Gary Paulsen. It's a story of two 11-year olds having fun and getting into trouble on a farm during a summer in the early 1950's. We've also had some fun earning mini boxes of cereal during our daily "Classroom Cereal Grammar Activities". Science has brought a few hands-on activities during our Mixtures and Solutions unit - one of them included making our own homemade ice cream. We teamed up with Mrs. Davis' grade 3/4 class to help copy out our recipes for our future Macdonald School Recipe book, and with Mrs. Rice's kindergarten class to do some buddy reading. In arts ed, we were fortunate enough to participate in a live zoom session hosted by a Saskatchewan improve troupe to help us sharpen our improve skills. In phys ed, we traveled to the Esterhazy curling rink to work on our curling skills with some practice drills and fun games. Thanks to the parents who joined us! It was a month filled with several skating sessions. We got the pleasure to join up with the kindergarten class and many friendships were made. A big thank you to Mrs. Johanson for scheduling this time for us - we had a blast. We finally ended our busy month with another relaxing yoga class hosted by Ms. Petracek. Thanks Mrs. Petracek!
November Recap
This month was filled with so much joy! We have been having so much fun. In grade 7 we have been doing order of operations in math and learning how to add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals. In ELA, we read the short story "The Monkey's Paw" and created storyboards that you can see hanging outside of our classroom. The Banga's bought us a Christmas tree for our classroom (THANK YOU!!!!) and Ady, Kiana, and Lowe set it up on Wednesday. For science, we dissected owl pellets and just finished up our Sharkwater campaign. The kids have been working hard on there posters, podcasts etc. Our class has just started making props and sets for our Christmas concert.
The Grade 7 class is up and running for the 2022/2023 school year. The students were welcomed back with a fully renovated and furnished classroom. Thank you to our SCC, Crop for Community, and to GSSD facility team for making this happen!
Pictures will follow in October. Looking forward to a great year.
This month was packed with field trips for the grade 7’s! We went curling at the Esterhazy curling rink for one morning, then we went to the Esterhazy ski trails for the afternoon. We also went to Asessippi for a day of tubing, skiing and snowboarding! A couple days ago we went to the Yorkton Western Development Museum. In science, we are growing bean plants to prepare for the science fair that's happening in May. In ELA we have been working on a descriptive essay about a person. We are also working on debates. This month was so fun! I hope you enjoy the pictures!
Hello, Macdonald school! Since it is December 1st, we are going to recap what the grade 7’s did in November. Enjoy!
So for the school clubs and teams, we had a basketball sign up sheet put up in the gym. Oh, I'm so excited for that!
We also had the curling club start up at EHS and we are joining in with them, with mixed teams.
And Ms. Hovind and Ms. Sapieha started up the Activist Club for the 7,8,9’s.
In gym class we are focusing on our basketball skills, and we were learning about dynamic and static.
We had science, and we had 3 quizzes, about the earth's core, volcanoes and earthquakes.
And we were given a list of different disasters ( volcanoes erupting, tsunamis, earthquakes) that had happened in history, and we had to pick one, and do a presentation about it. Some kids chose to do a poster, google slides, power point.
Just recently we switched to social with Mrs.Hovind. We are now learning about Japan and The Koreas history.
In our ELA centers we are working on a reader's theaters. Our class is split into 2 groups, one is working on The Stolen Laptop and the Haunted House.
In art, we are working on a Christmas play, called the Christmas Spiders with Mrs.Bogard.
For the last 2 days of November, we had been working out a school assembly slide show. Did you guys like it? I thought it was...unique!
Well that's a rap for what we grade 7’s did in November! Can't wait for all the exciting days of december!
NEWSLETTER - written by a group of grade 7 students.
Hello, MacDonald school! This is your monthly newsletter. For this newsletter, the theme is back to school September Recap with the GR.7’s. We will cover what has gone on in our class. Such as….
Truth and Reconciliation, Subjects, Golf, Brenda Redman, and Cross Country!
Subjects
So far in this school year, we've been learning loads in subjects like Ela, Science, Math, and Social studies
ELA
In ela, we just started learning about similes, metaphors, and poetry! For poetry, we've been reading poems and figuring out what the poems mean, what we picture in our head, etc.
We just got into similes and metaphors not even a week ago and we already know so much! Like what the difference between similes and metaphors are, how to tell the difference between a simile and metaphor, and so on!
Math
For math, we have been doing so much and it's only been a month into school!
We just finished our unit on divisibility rules prime and composite numbers, prime factorization, and factors! We’ve moved onto unit two, which is decimals!
Social Studies
In social all we've learned about was the federal election that happened and how it happens! It was a very interesting unit and I'm excited to learn more about the election in the future.
Last but not least we have science!
Science
In science, we are learning about things like abiotic and biotic organisms, microscopes, ecosystems and more! I've learned a lot and I'm very eager to learn more.
The Brenda Redman Presentation
Another thing that happened in the Grade 7 class, as we had a guest speaker come in, Brenda Redman. Brenda is the author of the children's book called, How’s Peanut? Brenda came and told us all about the writing process, the process of publishing a book, along with the inspiration and backstory behind her book. She also talked about how she got into writing kid’s stories.
Brenda spoke with passion as well as excitement. She was so excited and proud of her book that you couldn't help but feel excited with her. She spoke like she had talked in front of a class a thousand times. (Which, I mean she probably has.) She knew just what to say and just how to say it, so we never once got bored. Brenda also talked to her illustrator Wendi Nordell, and brought a binder full of Wendi's original sketches, starting in black/white and then colour.
Brenda was a great guest speaker! We all enjoyed listening to her share her story with us. We hope to see you again! ( I suggest you check out Brenda’s book! It's a great kid’s book! I hope she publishes her second kids’ book she is currently working on.)
Golf Trip
This September the grade 7 class was ever so fortunate to have the opportunity to go to the golf course for our first-ever field trip in a year. For these exciting events, we had to practice the basic skills of golf. So, during heath classes, we would go outside and practice our shots and use the disc golf course as a mock golf course to fully prepare for the big day!
Then the big day had come, we were already ready with our golf clubs and our golf balls.
The overflow of the day consisted of this:
We boarded the bus at approximately 10:30, and we were on the road by 10:35.
When we got to the course, we dropped off our bags and then we were off to the walking trails.
Once we raced to see who would finish the trails first we made our way back to the golf course for lunchtime.
We had a wonderful lunch. And now, it was time for the main reason we were here...
For the golf game of a lifetime!
In my full opinion, I had the time of my life during our field trip. And I’d say that the rest of the class would say the same thing!
My rating of the golf trip. 9/10
The rest of the newsletter teams ratings:
7/10
8/10
7/10
And a special thanks to:
The Esterhazy Golf Course for letting us have this occasion.
All the volunteers that helped
And lastly, Johanna for driving the bus.
Cross country
Our School happily competed in the saltcoates race. With the help of Mrs. Rice of course! Three of our kids got to go and win races for us around the area. Congrats to Abigail, Kayle, and Ashlynn for getting high enough to travel. Also congrats to those who tried hard and didn’t give up in the races.
At 8:00 in the morning our friends left for Saltcoats. By 10:00 in the morning the races started. Abby got 1st in her race.
Ash got 8th in her race.
Then the boys went and Kayle got 9th.
Luxton and Jordan thank you for trying and coming. We all ran 2 to 3 kilometers in the races. We had times between 10 and 15 minutes. Congratulations to everyone who participated in cross country!
Truth and Reconciliation
Reconciliation has a root word “reconcile” we need to reconcile what our ancestors did was wrong but know we are not the ones to blame. We can help them heal.
We celebrate orange shirt day on September 30 every year to show our support for the residential school survivors. We need reconciliation to heal, to forgive and to bring the bond that was severed like a frayed rope. We will not repeat the history that has torn us apart from the indigenous people. We know that the government back then was wrong. Now here are a few poems from our class about reconciliation.
Reconciliation is as important as life itself
It builds the ground we walk on
Reconciliation is healing like the sweetness of
Honey
The truth of what happened cuts like a knife
Reconciliation is as complex as the human mind
And I hope we can last
Despite our past
Our bonds broken
Like chains left in the cold
Our backs turned
Our minds closed
our hearts iced over
Our eyes a cold gaze
When you need us we will be here

And after the very hectic first month of school that's a snippet of what has happened. Well that's a wrap for this month. Have a good day.
