This week we began to review our letters and sounds. We don't follow the order of the alphabet. Instead, we start with letters and sounds that are found most commonly in words. In that way, kids can start decoding and spelling words as soon as possible! We use a program called UFLI to guide our sequence of letters. This week, we worked on the letters a and m. The students are already able to read the little word am! You can help at home by encouarging your child to print their letters in a top to bottom motion. We also began to learn about heart words. You might know heart words as sight words. These are words that we cannot sound out because the letters don't make traditional sounds we know. So, we have to learn them by heart. Our first heart word we learned was 'the'. I encouraged children to find this word in stories at home, because 'the' can be found everywhere!
This week we were visited by the team from Safely on Board. They talked about how we can keep ourselves safe when we ride the bus. We got to sit on the bus and practice a safe evacuation. More pictures to follow with your kiddos in them once the verification forms have been filled out!
This week, we brainstormed together what we knew about scientists. We decided that scientists are curious people who want to find out the answers to questions. We finished up by becoming scientists and doing a fun experiment with popcorn kernels, baking soda and vinegar. The students made a prediction about what would happen when we added all the ingredients together. It was a fun conclusion!
