Pera Sixes Hockey Tournament -2024

 

Grounds The Pera Sixes Hockey Tournament -2024, an annual invitational inter-university and inter-club event organized by the Pera Hockey Family in collaboration with the Department of Physical Education, took place on March 29th and 30th, 2024, at the University of Peradeniya.

                          

Featuring around 10 universities in the inter-university segment and 48 teams from across the nation in the inter-club segment, the tournament provided a platform for skillful and energetic players from diverse backgrounds to showcase their talents and skills on the field.

 

The two-day event was filled with intense competition, thrill, excitement, and sportsmanship, creating a colorful experience for all participants and spectators.

 

Day 01 focused on the inter-university segment, commencing with an opening ceremony graced by Prof. M.D. Lamawansa, Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, and Dr. Shiva Sivananthan from Sivananthan Laboratories USA as the guest of honor. The Director of the Physical Education Department, Prof. N.W.B. Balasooriya, also attended to welcome and applaud all university hockey teams.

 

The inter-university tournament comprised two stages, with a preliminary league followed by a knockout stage. The University of Peradeniya Hockey Team emerged as champions in the men’s category, while the University of Moratuwa and Sabaragamuwa University were jointly crowned champions in the women’s category.

 

Day 02 featured the inter-club segment, including a preliminary stage followed by cup, plate, bowl, and shield trophy matches. Creators Sports Club and Old Aloysius Hockey Club shared the cup segment title, while Old Kingswoodians Hockey Club emerged victorious in the plate segment. SLA Service Corps and KH and FC secured victories in the bowl and shield championship, respectively. In the women’s category, Kandy Ladies claimed the title after defeating Wennapuwa in the finals.

 

Individual accolades were also awarded, with SathijaBhanuka and NilshiJeewanandara named Most Outstanding Players in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively. Harinsu Bandara and AshaniImesha were recognized as the Best Goalkeepers in the men’s and women’s categories, while IshankaJayasundara and MadushaniJayaneththi received the Most Outstanding Player awards in the men’s and women’s categories, with AvishkaShehan and NeeliyaKawshini honored as the Best Goalkeepers.
