The graduate students who meet the following requirements may apply for a PhD degree examination:
1. The student must finish the required course works/credits.
2. All papers must be published or accepted prior to the degree examination, and followed the published article specification.
3. Students must be in the status as an official PhD Degree Candidate and have passed at least 3 English presentations (including seminars, proposal, qualification, or progress reports)
4. Students pass the intermediate English language proficiency tests including TOEFL、GEPT、IELTS、TOEIC etc. (Foreign students don't need)
5. The approval by the thesis committee is mandatory.
6. The draft of the written thesis must be completed.
Apply for Degree examination
Students completed the required coursework and credits. An original transcript, signed by the advisor, must be submitted for credit check to the administration office one month before examination.
1. Students should submit a degree examination application checklist (download as follows), and attach the following information (a) a primary draft thesis/dissertation with approval by the thesis/dissertation proposal committee, (b) papers published (or been accepted) plus one summaries in English, (c) an originality report from the online plagiarism detection system and the first page of report needs to be signed by advisor, (d) the evaluation formed approved by the degree examination committee. The above application documents must be sent to the ICM office for review one month before the degree exam date.
2. The doctoral examination committee shall consist of 5 to 9 members, including at least one-third of extramural faculty members, appointed from those specializing in the disciplines related to the Ph.D. candidate’s dissertation, which shall be approved by the President. The dissertation advisor shall not act as the convener of the committee.
3. Not only application documents but also the eligibility of committee members must be reviewed and approved by the Institute of Academic Advisory Committee.
4. After Academic Advisory Committee agrees to your application, you will apply degree examination online.
5. Students will apply degree examination online and print application form and the list of committee members.
6. Students have to submit application form with the advisor’s signature and the list of committee members to the ICM Office at least one month before the scheduled degree examination。
7. Timeline:
1)、 For Graduation in July: Degree examination must be completed by July 30.
2)、 For Graduation in January: Degree examination must be completed by Jan 15.

Post- degree examination procedures
1. The dissertation advisor(s) and the director must sign the “certificate” and approve the final version of the dissertation.
2. Before the final copy has been printed, the student must have one certificate signed by his/her advisor, committees, and the ICM director.
3. The certificate should be attached to the front of the final dissertation.
4. The book cover style must follow NCKU format.
5. Following approval of the final dissertation by the Committee, the student should complete the procedures specified in the student’s guide.
6. If a student granted a Pass status for the degree examination is unable to submit the approved dissertation papers with signatures from the Committee members before the registration date of the next semester, the students’ status will be active in that new semester.
7. As a result, students must pay for the base tuition/miscellaneous fees and select a 0 credit seminar course (for which there is no credit fee) [for students on NCKU scholarship who are still within their scholarship period, tuition payment will still be waived.
Candidates who fail the degree examination can apply for a re-examination, provided their time-to-degree limits have not yet expired. Re-examination is limited to one opportunity only. Students who fail the re-examination will be asked to withdraw from the program.

2025.12.19 is the Last Day to Apply for the Degree Examination, while the date of Oral Defense is 2026.01.29
The Last Day to Submit Oral Defense Results to the Registration Office is 2026.01.30

There are three forms(1)Defense scoring chart(評分表) , (2)Defense certificate(論文合格證明書) and (3)List of dissertation review fees (審查交通份印領清冊) described as follows.
(1)Defense scoring chart- Only one score and each committee has signed on Defense scoring chart.
(2)Defense certificate
1). All committee (including advisor) must sign on the Defense certificate.
2). Email the revised thesis to me and put the Defense certificate on director’s desk.
3). After director checked your revised thesis, he will sign on your defense certificate.
(3)List of dissertation review fees-List of dissertation review fees which are the blanks of the household registration address , ID No and signature should be completed by each committee.

Both advisors must sign the application form for graduation from NCKU.
Both of Application for Embargo of Thesis Dissertation of NCKU and National Library are be signed by both advisors.

Step 2 – Libraries(Prepare 2 hardcover papers and NCKU Application for Embargo of Thesis Dissertation) and Step 3 - Registrar's Division are on your own.

If your thesis is published directly, application for Embargo of Thesis Dissertation of NCKU and National Library is not needed.
Within the specified announcement period, log in to the website https://preofact.ncku.edu.tw/robe/index.php?auth , enter the required information,and pay the rental fee.
After the ICM office reviews it, print out the form. You will be notified to pick it up, and then you can take the form to the Property Management Division to borrow graduation gown.
Property Management Division is Located at 1st Floor, East Building, Yunping Building.
1. When applying for an embargo on a thesis/dissertation to the National Central Library, in addition to completing the application form , certification documents approved by the university must also be provided.
Currently, NCKU does not provide a template for the certification.
If students requests a template, we will suggest referring to the explanation provided by National Taiwan University (NTU) or taking the template from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) for reference.

If the application for an embargo on a thesis/dissertation is rejected by the National Central Library, graduates must return to the school to handle any necessary supplemental procedures.
2. When the embargo period for a thesis/dissertation has expired and a further extension is requested, the advisor must submit an official document via the electronic document system to the National Central Library, attaching the embargo extension application along with the certification documents approved by the university.
The application and certification must be personally signed by the advisor. If there are two or more advisors, all must sign the relevant documents.
