AP4ME offers Maine high school students throughout the state the opportunity to take Advanced Placement (AP) courses completely online, regardless of where they live or their school’s ability to support AP courses. Students must apply for and be approved by both parent/guardian and high school (HS) counselor to enroll in AP4ME courses via ExplorEC, the Early College portal to Maine’s Public Universities.
To view and apply for AP4ME classes in ExplorEC (external site) students should use the “Course Search at Maine’s Public Universities” page and apply the following dropdown menu filters:
Select Term: Fall 2023
Select Campus: University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI)
Select Subject(s): (AP) Advanced Placement
All Maine high school students are eligible to enroll in a maximum of two AP4ME courses per academic year. Homeschool students registered with the Maine Department of Education may also participate in AP4ME classes (up to two courses per academic year).
Students are not awarded University of Maine System credit as a result of AP4ME course participation. For students to receive CollegeBoard “credit” for their course, students must complete the AP Exam. AP4ME does not arrange exam dates or provide financial support for fees associated with AP exams. AP Exam registration should be completed in the fall with the WHS Counseling Office.

Students should remember that if they choose to take an online course, they must seek pre-approval AND then request their transcript be sent to WHS from the college once the final grade is issued. Their grade will be on BOTH their high school and University of Maine system transcript. Earning high school and college credit for a course is a great benefit, but also carries a lot of weight. If the grade is low or failing, it will be reflected on both transcripts and can affect the student’s grade point averages in both schools.
Students interested in enrolling in an early college course should reach out to their school counselor with any questions.
Windham High School partners with Virtual High School, an online learning community, that allows us to supplement our course catalog with a variety of rigorous class options. Using VHS's online platform, students can communicate with their teacher, complete weekly coursework, and participate in discussions with classmates, much like in a traditional course. Students should explore the course catalog and then reach out to their school counselor during course registration if they are interested in enrolling.
