Maths Investigations
A maths investigation is an open-ended exploration where students use mathematical skills and reasoning to solve a problem, explore patterns, or answer a question. Unlike routine exercises with clear steps and one correct answer, a maths investigation encourages curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
In a maths investigation, students are often given a task or scenario but must decide how to approach it, what information they need, and what strategies to use. They might:
Explore patterns and relationships in numbers or shapes
Make and test conjectures (educated guesses)
Collect, organize, and analyze data
Use different methods and tools (e.g. diagrams, charts, algebra, etc.)
Communicate their thinking and findings clearly
The goal is to deepen understanding of mathematical ideas and develop problem-solving skills, rather than just get a right answer.
