work-based learning opportunities

You can check out the What Is Work-Based Learning page for more specifics, but most of my students at Bonds Career Center and its feeder high schools are shooting for opportunities that allow them to earn while they learn. My co-workers and I try to coordinate Work-Based Learning opportunities that will help our students become "Career Ready" by the time they leave us.

Career Ready Work-Based Learning Possibilities

(*Must meet state accountability requirements to be counted as Career Ready experiences)

  • Apprenticeships and Youth Apprenticeships: Many apprenticeships are registered with the federal Department of Labor. Many of these opportunities are designed for adults, but they can be combined with a Youth Apprenticeship program for students who are at least 16 years old. The earn-while-you-learn program is structured for the on-the-job training that compliments classroom lessons. The end goal is to meet the requirements for professional certifications and transition from apprenticeship to full-time employment if desired.

  • Co-ops: Students in our career centers can earn the right to interview for a co-op position in their second year. These positions are not guaranteed to all career center students, but we encourage all of our students to work toward that goal and focus on attendance, discipline, and grades from Day One. Students who earn the privilege to co-op may work at an off-site business up to four days a week during their "Bonds time."

  • Internships: Internships are available to qualified first year career center students and "regular" high school students outside school hours and in the summer. Business partners work with me and our instructors to coordinate the training process. Many of our career center students who are successful in internships are able to roll those opportunities into co-ops.

Internship and Co-op Requirements

One of the benefits of attending Bonds Career Center is the possibility of working in an internship or co-op to gain valuable, real-world experience and on the job training. Many of our students have started their careers through successful high school co-ops. An added bonus for some students is that those career-starting co-ops are with companies that pay for college or reimburse college tuition for full-time employees. Any student who wants to make a senior year co-op his or her goal, needs to know the requirements and plan ahead.

Instructors may recommend a first-year student for an internship outside school hours. Teachers can recommend a second-year student for a co-op, which allows the student to work up to four-days a week in an Upstate business during their normal “Bonds time.”

Working in a co-op is a privilege, not a right. Administrators may revoke that privilege at any time. Administrators also reserve the right to waive requirements on a case-by-case basis.

In order to apply for any type of Work-Based Learning, a student must have:

· At least an 70 average in his/her CTE course and passing grades in all high school classes

· OSHA -10 certification where applicable

· Teacher recommendation

· Parental permission

· Valid driver’s license

· Reliable transportation

· Working resume

Alanna McFadden, a student at Riverside High School, completed a successful LaunchGVL internship at Greenville County First Steps and Primrose School in the summer of 2019. Alanna is interested in pursuing a career in pediatric medicine, and her internship allowed her to work directly with children and learn about programs that directly affect the lives of children in our area. Alanna is pictured to the left with some of her co-workers. She is on the front row on the left side.

LaunchGVL is a partnership between Greenville County Schools and the Greenville Chamber of Commerce. LaunchGVL business partners provide paid internships in many different career pathways. Interested students can apply for Spring, Summer, and Fall internships on the LaunchGVL website. The program is available to juniors and seniors at Bonds Career Center and its feeder high schools.

careers in advanced manufacturing

There is a misperception about careers in manufacturing. Many people envision the dark, dirty, and unsafe textile mills of the past when they think about modern manufacturing. That's simply not the case for most of the advanced manufacturing facilities here in the Upstate. Take BMW's plant just across the Spartanburg County line for example. Thousands of people work in this plant every day, and it's far from the textile mills of the past; it's on the cutting edge of the future in advanced manufacturing.

Salute to the class of 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic abruptly ended the Class of 2020's high school career and plunged those students into an uncertain future. This is our tribute to all they accomplished before the world changed forever.
