Physical activity is critical to the development and maintenance of good health. The goal of physical education is to develop physically educated individuals who have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful activity.


Physical Education Course Standards:


Standard 1 — Demonstrate competency in motor skills movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.


Standard 2 —Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.


Standard 3 — Participates regularly in physical activity.


Standard 4 — Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.


Standard 5 — Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings.


Standard 6 — Values physical activity for healthy, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and or social interaction.

Units of Instruction: Units will vary depending on rain situations, assemblies, snow days, Covid-19, etc. The virtual lessons will be from the district.

August: K-5 Game Play, 2-5 Fitnessgram 

September: K-4 Catching; 2-5 Fitnessgram, Knock-Out

October: K-5 Parachute, K-3 Underhand Toss, K-5 Overhand Throw, 4-5 Bicycling

November: 4-5 Bicycling, K-3 Bocce, K-3 Dance, 2-5 Chasing. Dodging, Fleeing

December: K-5 Santa's Fitness Workshop and other holiday activities

January: K-2 Educational Gymnastics, Rope Skills, Cone Ball

February: K-5 Golf, 2-5 Fitnessgram

March K-1 King of the Pin, 3-5 Chasing Dodging Fleeing in a game situation,  K-5 Ping Pong

April: K-5 Tossing in a game situation (2 Hoop), K-2 Batting, K-5 Volleyball

May: K-5 Whale's Tales, Mat Ball, Castle Ball



Instructional Materials and Resources/Required Text: No text at this time. Students will be given teacher handouts. Students are encouraged to read about sports and fitness and to engage in physical activity after school hours. 


Major Assessments: Skills tests and/or paper/pencil tests will be given for each unit.


Grading Scale: Students in physical education classes are graded using a Q (quality achievement of standards), M (meets standards), P (progressing toward standards) or L (little or no progress toward standards). They will be graded according to the standards and selected skill assessments.

Homework: Students will be given activities to do at home that will correspond with Fitness activities that we have been covering in class. Students are encouraged to be physically active after school hours. Parent participation is encouraged.


Make-up Work: Ample time will be allowed for students to make up any class work they missed for being absent. Any written work that was missed can be made up in our classes with a two-week deadline.


Rules for Behavior:


1. Respect yourself

A. Stay on your feet.

B. Have fun and do your best.

C. Wear tennis shoes

2. Respect others

A. Don't interrupt others.

B. Use good sportsmanship.

3. Respect this place.

A. Don't touch equipment without permission.

B. Take care of our gym.


Consequences: (not necessarily in this order)

1. Time out and/or change of activity

2. Note or call home

3. Referral


Student procedures: Students will be allowed to use the rest room and get water in the facilities before or after class.


Rules and Protocols: Students will explore the rules and procedures during the first days of school.


Excuses: Each time a student needs to be excused from physical education, a note must be sent from either a doctor or the parent/guardian.


Clothing Requirements: Tennis shoes are required. Clothes should be comfortable. The students should dress for the weather and plan on being outside.


Reward System: Students are able to receive a variety of things based solely on behavior. A special reward for the students who exhibit extraordinary behavior is the Star Student Award.


Students will also be able to receive physical fitness awards (grades 3-5) and rope climbing awards.


Communication: Parental communication will be done in a variety of ways including phone calls, personal contact, notes, and newsletters.
