A complete list of all of the SC Visual Arts Standards by grade level can be found at https://ed.sc.gov/. New Visual Art Standards have been adapted and will be transitioned to during this school year and fully implemented during the 2020 school year. The SC Visual Arts Standards are scaffolding; ideas build upon each other, and therefore, many concepts, skills, and techniques are repeated across grade levels. Specific project types, ideas, and subject matter will be determined by the teacher and are subject to change depending on supplies, student interest and need. Each grade level will work with clay. Each grade level will participate in an annual school-wide Art Show in the Spring. Some work from each child will be held for the Art Show, and sent home after the show is complete. Students in grades 3-5 will be making sketchbooks at the beginning of the school year. These books will be used for student ideas, practice drawings, journaling, and as a given assignment throughout the school year. People have been making art for all of time. Students will explore, interpret, and discuss famous artwork in relation to every lesson and project in art. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of art media, art history, technique, and processes with the intent of furthering their understanding, perception, appreciation, expression and confidence in visual art. Grading ACTIVE CLASS PARTICIPATION: 80% -1 grade per class session The following may be included within this category: students’ on-task attention, following directions, work with other students, taking care of materials, wise use of time on projects, minor quizzes or projects, homework or required outside projects. Assessment in Art is maintained primarily through teacher observation, student participation, project rubrics and checklists. Grades will be kept daily and as projects are completed, and will be reported on student report cards.
Behavior Expectations In Art, our rules are: 1. Kind words. 2. Use materials safely and appropriately. 3. Be responsible for your work area. 4. Try every day. Acknowledgements We acknowledge students who exhibit desired behaviors with Art Star Cards. Students can use Star Cards to earn the following rewards: Each time that a student receives a Star Card, his/her name will be entered into a weekly drawing.
Consequences: We discourage inappropriate behavior in our school and classrooms. The following guidelines will be followed for discouraging inappropriate behaviors: ● If a student does not follow one of our school or classroom expectations, he/she will receive a verbal warning and will be re-taught the desired behavior. ● If the inappropriate behavior continues, the student will receive a Classroom Discipline Report. All Classroom Discipline Reports will be written by the teacher in the classroom and sent home to the parent. The consequences for a Classroom Discipline Report may be (Examples: silent lunch, 5 minutes of structured recess, removal from the group). Three Classroom Discipline Reports that occur over the course of a month or one severe offense will result in an office referral. All office referrals will be sent to the office to be seen by the assistant principal or principal and consequences will be administered by the assistant principal or the principal. After two office referrals, a conference with administration, teacher and parents is required.
Classroom Management Procedures: Depending on the frequency and/or severity of inappropriate behavior one or more of the following may be used. ● Loss of privilege, such as classroom and lunch seating choice or delayed recess ● Parent contact (by phone, written note, or email) ● Student conference with administrator ● Discipline referral
Non-Instructional Routines Students are expected to enter the classroom quietly. Most classes will begin with the students at the demonstration table. Students will often share supplies at their table, and are responsible for their work area during project time and clean up. Students are expected to use the restroom before or after class. Visuals for nonverbal cues are posted in the art room.
