Firebird Auto Mechanics is part of the Enrichment program at Dr. Phinnize J. Fisher Middle School, led by Mr. Morrill. This program gives students hands-on opportunities to learn the fundamentals of automotive technology by working directly on Mr. Morrill's 2013 Chevy Equinox. Students will change the oil, study how intake and exhaust cams receive lubrication, explore the fuel system, and replace the high-pressure fuel pump, etc—all while learning how key systems keep a vehicle running smoothly. Along the way, they build valuable problem-solving, collaboration, and technical skills.
A key goal of Firebird Auto Mechanics is connecting students with real-world expertise. As the program expands, students will take an active role in identifying and inviting community partners to share their expertise, mentor young learners, and inspire future pathways in automotive technology, engineering, and design.
Schedule of Meetings (8:45-10:15am)
1. Engine Basics & Oil Change (September 26, 2025)
Start with OBD-II scan. Then, learn how an engine works, why lubrication is important, and perform a full oil and filter change on the 2013 Chevy Equinox.
Community Partner: TBD
2. Fuel System & Fuel Pump (October 31, 2025)
Explore how the fuel system works and assist in safely replacing the high-pressure fuel pump.
Community Partner: TBD
3. Ignition System: Spark Plugs & Jump Starting (December 18, 2025)
Remove and replace spark plugs, measure spark plug gaps, apply dielectric grease, and safely perform a jump-start on a vehicle.
Community Partner: TBD
4. Air Intake & PCV System (January 30, 2026)
Replace the engine air filter, clean the PCV system, and examine how clean airflow supports combustion.
Community Partner: TBD
5. Brakes & Tires (February 27, 2026)
Safely lift the vehicle, remove and reinstall a wheel, check brake pad thickness, measure tire pressure, and test tread depth.
Community Partner: TBD
6. Lights & Wiring (March 27, 2026)
Replace headlight and taillight bulbs, test electrical circuits, and install a trailer wiring harness.
Community Partner: TBD
7. Diagnostics & OBD-II Scanning (April 24, 2026)
Use an OBD-II scanner to retrieve diagnostic codes, look up their meaning, and brainstorm possible solutions for system issues.
Community Partner: TBD
