How can we help our community appreciate the history of indigenous people that live in Northern Michigan?
Social Studies
Project Overview
Students will study the life and culture Indigenous Peoples in Northern Michigan at different points in history. We will analyze life before and after European settlement of the United States.
Public Products
6th and 7th Grade
Students will create a visual timeline showing life at different points in time using a local landmark (i.e. boardman river, sleepy bear dunes)
8th Grade Capstone
Students will create a project slice using project standards for younger students to complete during Native American Heritage Month next November
Project Standards
North America to 1500 CE - use a case study to describe the culture and economy of Indigenous Peoples in North America prior to 1500.
Westward Expansion – analyze the annexation of the west through the Louisiana Purchase, the removal of Indigenous Peoples from their ancestral homelands, the Mexican-American War, the growth of a system of commercial agriculture, and the idea of Manifest Destiny.
Consequences of Expansion – develop an argument based on evidence about the positive and negative consequences of territorial and economic expansion on Indigenous Peoples.
America at Century’s End – compare and contrast the United States in 1800 with the United States in 1898, focusing on similarities and differences.
