MI Impacts

September 19- November 4

Driving Question

What are MI Roots?

Project Overview

Students will study what Michigan was like during the 1800s and compare it to what Michigan is like today in terms of land, trades, agriculture, and people.

Social Studies

Students will be learning about life in the Antebellum United States. This is the period in the U.S. leading up to the American Civil War. Students will learn about life in the Northeast, and South and the impacts of Westward Expansion in this era. They will connect these events to life in Michigan and Traverse City during this period.

Science

MI Food Fight has students investigating more sustainable ways of growing our food. Students are studying the importance of ecosystem biodiversity and the impacts from conventional farming methods.

Math

Math 6/7 students will be creating a route for a walking tour of the State Hospital and graphing each stop on the tour on a coordinate plane.

Literature

Students will be exploring those who have made or are making a positive impact on Michigan in some way, whether by helping the economy, nature or social justice issues.

ELA

Students will be working through the initial stages of the writing process. They will be drafting comparison pieces that explain how Traverse City has changed over time.

World Language

Students will be learning vocabulary around family and physical descriptions to discover their own roots in another language.

Outdoor Education

Students will learn about plants and animals native to the area that were used during the 1800s, as well as today. They will also examine how the Commons has transformed over the past 200 years.

P.E./ Health

Students will explore the roots of P.E. during the 1800s and learn how it has evolved into the class they see today.
