Waste
Waste
A little context
We established our first recycling centre in 2013 and in 2024 it is getting a major reboot. Our center supports the School, the School community and our surrounding neighbours to manage their recyclable waste responsibility. Taking eight categories of recyclable materials, the center also takes used cooking oil for the BioBuses and green/compostable waste. Within the campus, we have six different composting technologies. Within our recycling center 'KemBali' we retain valuable discarded materials (eg: cardboard, bottle caps) for students to use as resources for art and projects. The KemBali pop-up market for clothing, household goods and toys continues to operate, with the market open to the community and neighbourhood each term or semester.
Current projects
A rebuild of the KemBali recyclable waste management center to make it more user-friendly, a place for education and a place the collection of resources that can be reused. The expansion of the center will allow for easier collection of compostable waste, including kitchen scraps and utilising Black Soldier Fly liquid composting systems. This project is being led by a student, with students from High School and Primary and many parents involved and supporting. The building will be a work of recycled art when finished.
A mini-KemBali is being designed and installed in Primary in collaboration with Primary leadership and students. This will allow students to collect, measure and monitor waste generated within their Learning Neighbourhood. All these projects are on-track to finish in 2024.
Impacts so far
Around 800kg of trash is managed through KemBali each month. That totals an estimated 9.5 tonnes of trash for the year. We also collect trash at our Mangrove Sanctuary regularly, with over 2.5 tonnes collected in 2023-24. The Mangrove retrieved trash goes to Sangai Watch for processing.
Who is leading this?
Grade 12 student, Ella, is leading the new KemBali project, along with Pak Made Gusta / Solutions Centre Team - solutions@greenschool.org. Our partners in recycling are Eco Bali.
