Mangrove Regeneration
Mangrove Regeneration
A little context
This is a big and beautiful, long-term regeneration project, providing learning by doing for all community members. In 2020, we began discussions with Government authorities to gain agreement to be the caretakers of a mangrove sanctuary in the Sanur area. This is a satellite learning centre for our School focussing on scientific field studies and hands-on, solutions-based learning.
The School has also partnered with the people who live locally in the mangrove area to build a sustainable and economically uplifting enterprise. With support from our staff, kayak tours in the mangroves, led by local community members on a fee-for-paddle basis, are up and running.
Current projects
Planting mangrove seedlings, clearing and cleaning trash from the mangroves, replenishing aquatic life, building boardwalks and bridges to preserve and conserve the ecosystem while facilitating entry for regeneration and learning purposes. Two new bridge building projects are scheduled for 2024.
Impacts so far
25 meters of boardwalk built
1 floating boardwalk built
2 bridges built
9,000 mangrove seedlings planted
3 tonnes of trash retrieved from the mangroves
1 pontoon fish nursery built and installed
