We pledge to use only what we need - no more, no waste. Things we procure are less harmful to the land, air and water when produced, used or consumed. It isn’t easy, but it is always front of mind.
We do our best to ensure that we know our products and services purchased are the least harmful to the environment. Considering environmental aspects, potential impacts and costs associated with their life cycle, we look for value for money solutions that minimise damage to the environment. Where possible we buy locally, recycled and recyclable, using less chemicals and reducing the carbon footprint associated with the life cycle of products and services.
Our Pledge in Action
We love the Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle and Return (to earth) approach and take all reasonable steps to understand, assess and select products and services and that meet our needs and protect the earth.
Moderation:
We start by striving to reduce excessive consumption by deeply considering actual needs, before placing new orders.
We share resources and equipment to make efficient use of our purchased items.
We take responsibility for keeping resources secure and in good condition - extending their longevity.
We avoid single-use/disposible products.
We minimise ‘virgin’ plastic products.
We look to repair before we replace.
Consideration:
As a start point, we prefer products and services which are:
Sourced locally
High quality with expected long functionality
Refillable and reusable
Can be and are stored safely and securly
Made from natural materials and free from PVC.
The key environmental issues we consider over the life cycle of products and services include:
energy use, and type of energy used
water use and water quality impacts
resource use, including the use of non-renewable resources and use of recycled materials
volume and type of waste generated
end-of-life options, such as reuse, recyclability and resource recovery
impact on natural habitat
level of toxic and hazardous substances or waste
noise, pollutants and emissions.
We have a Green School Bali purchasing list of 'approved items' for general school supplies and a process for decision-making outside the controlled system. The approved list is updated annually to review the best options available, based on the points above.
Innovation:
We support local innovators who are developing and producing products and services that meet our needs.
We encourage local economic development, make ethical purchasing decisions and are prepared to try new solutions.
Strategic Learning and Solutions Focus: Annual review of purchasing requests and ‘consumed’ items. Source lower environmental impact options and ensure minimal wastage by looking for alternative solutions.
