Our Environmental Policy Pledges are our overarching commitments, as good environmental stewards of our campus and school.
They help us with decision-making, and staying true to our values. Approved by the Board of Learners, these Pledges apply to all of us in our community. When everyone plays their part, we are truly a Community of Learners, Making Our World Sustainable.
We love our history of innovation and maintain a 'laboratory of ideas' approach for solutions-based innovations on our campus. Our work is ongoing on our habits and practices around what we consume, how we power and transport ourselves, manage our waste, conserve water and protect and regenerate our environment. With our Strategic Plan Beacons to guide us, we commit to children's learning, first and always, and strive for a cohesive, community-wide approach for maximum impact.
‘We are inspired by the challenge to find solutions for our School and our lives, and in the process, unearth a deeper, wilder understanding of what it means to be human.’
With love and respect.

We pledge to be ambassadors of clean, renewable energy, striving to minimize consumption, harness renewable sources, and make energy production a tangible part of learning. Our actions power us to be fully powered by renewables and light the path to a more sustainable future.
We will become energy-independent using a mixture of renewable energy sources to maximise learning opportunities. Beyond this, we will generate surplus renewable energy for distribution back to the system/surrounding community. Click for more...
We pledge to be good stewards of water. We actively conserve, manage, and replenish Earth's water resources. Through student-driven solutions, we give back as much as we take from the aquifer.
Water is a critical limited resource on Bali and elsewhere and our range of conservation efforts show that we are playing our part in solving the problem. We monitor, harvest, reduce wastage and reuse this life-giving resource through a variety of visible solutions.
We pledge to be guardians of our environment, putting everything back to the Earth that naturally belongs there, by refusing, repurposing or recycling things that don’t, and being a zero-to-landfull waste school.
We aspire to have zero waste production on campus and to inspire others to manage and reduce their waste production. This starts with a collective mindset of responsibility and accountability for being zero-to-landfill waste - from what we procure to what we eat. KemBali is part of the solution, but we prioritise ‘refuse’ and ‘reduce’ first and foremost.
We pledge to eat nutritious, seasonal, locally sourced, organic where possible, ethically procured and cruelty-free food. Good for people and good for the planet.
Single-use package free food underpins what we provide on campus and what food is allowed on campus from home/outside. Every child knows where their food comes from, from seed to production, to compost. Healthy, less processed, land-fill package free and at a price point that is as inclusive as possible.
We pledge to use only what we need - no more, no waste. Things we procure are less harmful to the land, air and water when produced, used or consumed. It isn’t easy, but it is always front of mind.
We do our best to ensure that we know our products and services purchased are the least harmful to the environment. Considering environmental aspects, potential impacts and costs associated with their life cycle. Where possible we buy locally, recycled and recyclable, using less chemicals and reducing the carbon footprint associated with products and services. Click for more...
When we are on the move, we pledge to go with the lowest carbon transport as our ‘normal’. Through education, innovation and action, we go where we need to go via a mix of solutions that put learning in the drivers seat.
We continuously strive to reduce our carbon footprint, promoting reduced and alternative transportation options. Supporting safe cycling, EV charging solutions and building on the founding philosophy and commitment of the BioBuses, we are in motion. We always start with checking on where we need to go and why. Reducing emissions begins here. Click for more...
We pledge to exist in harmony with our biodiverse environment. We know the biological life forms on our campus from the micro to the mega and are caretakers. We add to the richness of this system that we are a part of.
We understand the different species, from micro-organisms to trees, animals and fungi, and the ecosystems they collectively form. We are committed to ensuring that the environment of the school site is rich in biodiversity by surveying and identifying all living things - building an environmental census. We use this knowledge to conserve and improve biodiversity by informing campus development decisions and the regeneration projects we deploy. We also seek to add to wild spaces and the biodiversity of species through the products we use and consume as a community. Click for more...
We pledge to live the ‘campus is our classroom’ concept, blending structures, nature-based play spaces, wildness, and productive gardens in harmonious balance. We protect our wild spaces and use local, sustainable and innovative materials to create structures for learning.
Our 'greenprint' approach means we protect green spaces and biodiversity as we grow and develop our campus. We deeply understand the environmental impact of buildings and works and make choices that balance functional needs with ecological impacts. We minimise our footprint by maximising the use of existing structures and spaces for learning. Natural materials are integrated into play spaces, to enhance imagination play. Places for community connections, wildness, productive gardens, play and shelter work in harmony, aesthetically and environmentally. Click for more...
