Biodiversity and Rewilding Campus
Biodiversity and Rewilding Campus
A little context
These projects progress our Pledges around Biodiversity and our 'Greenprint' approach to building and playspaces. Our jungle campus is a balance of learning spaces, play spaces, places for sport, productive gardens and hands-on projects coalescing in harmony. Nestled in and around these spaces are wild places, nurtured as areas for intensive, carbon sequestering, soil health and biodiversity.
All projects are a hands-on opportunity to plan, prepare, plant, nurture and monitor the bio-diversity and growth. All projects underway and planned for the future involve students from all Learning Neighbourhoods.
Current projects
Two Miyawaki method forests across campus, in select locations in Middle, and High School neighbourhoods. This method is 30 times denser and accelerates soil biodiversity by x 100, by comparison with conventional reforestation methods. To be completed by the end of 2024.
One new native food forest using the syntropic agriculture method, providing yields at all stages of succession, self-fertilizing and imitating the structure and function of the native forest.
Our biggest projects for 2024 are the Miyawaki Forests, and a substantial food forest has been planted as a project between Grade 12 and our Geckos students. A BioBlitz is building a database of living species on our campus. This long-term citizen science project will add data to the global census and guide campus development decisions.
Impacts so far
244 trees using the Miyawaki method, 80 square meters, 42 species, 30 x more dense and 100 x more soil biodiversity compared to conventional reforestation methods. 30+ different native food forest trees and plants, 100+ total food forest plantings. BioBlitz database is building HERE.
Who is leading this?
Our partners in the Miyawaki forest method are Junglo, cofounded by a GSB Alumni, Chayton and Dungbeetle, cofounded by another GSB Alumni, Freddie. The Solutions Centre Team are point people for all these projects - solutions@greenschool.org
