Renewable Energy
Renewable Energy
A little context
We start with minimising the amount of power we use and work with these two principles:
Solutions should be visible and part of the learning experience
We aim for a mix of technologies, as a showcase of solutions
Since 2010, we have worked with renewable energy solutions, starting with solar and then adding micro hydro. As 'early adopters' of renewable technologies in Bali, we have had our challenges! Complexities of panels, turbines, inverters, batteries, monitoring systems along with our tropical environment, floods, and jungle campus have not made the quest easy. But we persist. We were one of the first to install microhydro of this scale in this region and also one of the first to establish integration with PLN and an agreed net metering system. In 2016 we upgraded our solar system to be both on and off-grid, for an integrated solution and in 2019 we began work with Turbulent as long-term partners on a new vortex.
Current projects
Further expansion and refresh of our solar panel array and initial panel installation at Green Camp. Vortex repairs continue with support from community experts and our partner Turbulent. We are installing a solar energy learning kit for students, in the Solutions Centre on campus. A power-generating stationary bicycle for learning and supporting theatre productions and demonstrations is also in the works.
Impacts so far
220,000kWh generated from our vortex since 2018
150,000kWh generated from our PV system since 2018
One electric vehicle charging station for our community and the public
