TikTok Drama. The type of drama that most people love to be a part of in the social media world. It is in the TikTok world where the L’ Oreal Telescopic Lift Mascara scandal between the controversial beauty influencers, Jeffree Star, James Charles, and Mikayla Nogueira arose. Nogueira was doing a sponsored post from L’Oreal for their new Telescopic Lift Mascara in Jan. 2023, but viewers have criticized her because they believe she was wearing false eyelashes.

TikTok responded in a frenzy. According to Business Insider, lots of users on TikTok dueted, stitched and even screenshotted Mikayla’s video to “expose her for her lies”. Her video was posted on Jan. 25, but Jeffree Star’s response video was on Jan. 27. Mikayla captioned the video as “THESE ARE THE LASHES OF MY DREAMS!!” There was an on-screen caption that said, “Partnership with L’ Oreal.’’

On Jan. 26, Jeffree Star tweeted a picture of the same mascara. He captioned it: “Let’s Get this review started… Jeffery Star Approved or Nah?”  On the same day, Star shared a Tik Tok video to his account, which has 3.6 million followers. According to Business Insider, Star said in the video, “You’ve woken up the…beast.” He was saying that he was planning on doing another makeup review, and hinted at the drama about the Mascara Controversy by saying, “Mascara and certain things I hear may be fraudulent.” The video had over 10.6 million views and 58,700 comments basically siding with him.

Star has been in many other controversies. He was exposed for being racist, a pedophile and was accused of many other bad labels. Many people canceled him for it and, now, everyone is siding with him because of allegedly false eyelashes. While it is bad to falsely advertise, Tik Tokers shouldn’t make assumptions

This is when James Charles comes into play. On Jan. 26, he posted a video captioned: “An UNsponsored L’ Oreal Telescopic Mascara review.”  In the video, James said that he would be trying the mascara that “has been causing quite a bit of drama on social media.” He was also hinting at Mikayla’s mascara video, just like Jeffree Star.

Since Star and Charles are part of the beauty industry, they just wanted to see what was going on and wanted to test it out (but that does not justify them being passive aggressive with their videos). Many other beauty influencers, including  Alissa Ashley, and a beauty YouTuber, Raw Beauty Kristi, also spoke on the issue. Some say that beauty influencers should be authentic. We may never know if Mikayla ACTUALLY used false eyelashes.
