Reed began playing the guitar at an early age. According to The New York Times, Reed started playing guitar in elementary school and then soon graduated to playing guitar in nightclubs, bars and around almost all of Atlanta as a teenager. Reed was a good actor, as well; he starred in movies like: the Smokey & The Bandit series, The Waterboy with actor/comedian Adam Sandler, Stroker Ace, and Hot Stuff. When Reed was around 16 years old, he dropped out of high school and went to play with other country music stars like Waylon Jennings, along with Faron Young and Ernest Tubb.

Hubbard was married to Priscilla Mitchell on July 9, 1959, all the way to Sept. 1, 2008. Reed wrote a song, "Eastbound and Down", for the hit movie Smokey & The Bandit. He was more famous for his songs than for his acting career, even though he starred in a dozen of films in the 1970’s, '80s  and  '90s.

Something interesting about Reed was that, according to The Washington Post, "He wrote two songs for Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Elvis Presley; these two songs included 'Guitar Man' and 'U.S. Male'." Reed had also written songs for the series of Smokey and the Bandit, which included the musical theme for Smokey and the Bandit “Smokey”,  and “Eastbound & Down.”
