Spirit Week Review

By Aylah Graves

The week of Feb. 27th- Mar. 3 is spirit week for GPHS. Leadership puts on spirit week during the weeks before dances and other festive times. Spirit weeks are done to bring hype and spirit to the student body.

Spirit week this Feb. was done the week before the Winter ball dance. With two snow days,  the week was shortened. Some people have mixed feelings about spirit weeks. Some enjoy them and have fun dressing up, going over the top, and overall participating. Other students do not enjoy them as much because they feel that they are pointless or boring.

It is important and very special to show school spirit as it helps to bring up the energy and create a fun environment for the student body. This is the goal of our spirit weeks, along with other spirit activities such as assemblies and recognition activities. According to an anonymous junior at GPHS, “I love spirit week because you get to go out, be extra, and have fun with your friends. It may be cheesy sometimes or a little embarrassing but if you just try to have fun and not worry about what others are thinking of you, you will always have a good time. It’s lame to not have school spirit and we only get four years to be able to do fun things like this, so make the most of it.”

It is also important to remember that positive and constructive feedback from the student body helps to give guidance to the people behind these events. If you have concerns or new ideas for more themes you want to see in your school that fall under the job description of the Leadership class, then let them know. There is always room for improvement in everything and communication is essential to see the changes you want. Regarding spirit week and other spirit-filled activities, Junior student Naia Olivier says, “I love that our school has students that want to get involved and hype up the environment of the school. It’s so cool to be able to make the school feel like a different atmosphere during those special times and it really helps to lift my spirits and the moods of the student body as a whole. So be cool and participate and get involved.”

Regardless of how you feel about spirit weeks and other school-related activities and events, we can all admit that school spirit can be fun. We are lucky to have a community that uplifts each other even in silly and fun ways. So make sure you keep participating and bring that GP hype!
