Below is a set of prompts for styles of writing beyond journalism. The idea is that you can create some kind of creative writing piece inspired by one of the prompts, but your entry does not have to be prompt-based. You can submit any piece of writing you would like to share! All submissions should be school-appropriate. You can also suggest prompts to be featured in the next issue.
Springtime is when new stories come alive as the warmth begins. I would love to hear some prompts about how your summer went.
You might choose to write about the following:
Where did you travel?
Describe your favorite place to swim.
Write a story about a family member's visit.
I feel Apollo jump, the air rushing out of me. We are soaring, going high. I open my eyes just as we reach the ground on the other side. He did it! He jumped the gate. Not slowing down, Apollo is running through the forest. The trail gets dark before we reach the end and the sun shines in my face. The waves of the ocean are beautiful and loud. Apollo is sprinting along the beach now and I laugh, no longer noticing the pain in my thigh. I spread my arms and call out, smiling while Apollo runs. Another sound appears, similar to Apollo's, like another horse is running. Looking behind me, Realynn is riding with a small mare. I grab the reins again and smile at her.
“You are slow!” I yell at her.
Giving me a devil smile, she speeds up and is head-to-head with me.
“Oh, you wanna play that game?” Realynn yells back. Laughing, I shake my head, slowing down with her. Apollo comes to a slow walk with the other mare.
“I think that's enough running for one day.” My leg feels numb, and I turn toward the stables with Apollo.
Realynn closes the gate and turns to me. “Aren’t you gonna get off?” she asks, as I am still on Apollo.
I nod weakly. I turn and slowly get off, trying not to cry out. As I hit the ground, I go forward a bit, grabbing Apollo.
“Little birdie?” Realynn grabs my shoulder and turns me around with concern on her face. I wince, and smile at her.
“I am okay, don't worry about it.” She's so close-- “Wha- Hey!” I yelp out as I am suddenly thrown over her shoulder.
“ No, you’re not. You obviously are in pain.” She starts toward the buildings, leaving behind the horses in the gated fence area.
“But-- what about the horses!” I say, while watching Apollo turn around, eating. Traitor.
“They will be fine. Just worry about yourself first and whatever you did to hurt yourself.” I couldn’t protest with her because, honestly, it hurts like a donkey's butt.
“Sit,” she says, even though she literally throws me on her couch. Oh, her couch. Her very own couch, in her room--
“ Well, um-.. Really! You don't have to!” I sit down, exhausted, but scoot back further away from her. Realynn rolls her eyes, ignoring my complaints.
“Where are you hurt?” she asks, while going to a cabinet by her bed. I look away.
“It's nothing, really.” I look towards the door, wondering. Could I really outdo her in that type of way? Realynn turns toward me, bandage in hand.
“Oh yeah? Then stand up, and come here.” She says it like it's some sort of threat.
I grind my teeth together, forcing my body to put pressure on my leg. Finally standing after what feels like forever, I turn to face her. “See? Truly, I am alright if I can stand it.”
Her eyes are cast down towards the sage green couch. I don’t know what she's looking at until I feel the warmth. I slowly turn my head and see a red spot, right where I was sitting. I hear her make a half-choked, half-strangled noise in her throat.
“What happened? Who did this?” Her voice is pained, and it makes me feel sorry for being like this in front of her.
