In this article, Be says goodbye to our incredible editor, Riley Barta.
Riley Barta has always put her best foot forward when it comes to The Scroll. As she moves on to the next era of her life, her presence in Journalism will be missed. Barta has been writing for The Scroll for the past four years: two of them as a writer, and two as editor.
Barta is an extraordinary student, brilliant and driven. She proved it this year by earning 2nd place in the History Academic Masters competition. Her favorite historical events are the Hungarian Uprising and the Cold War, which feel fitting for someone with her fire. In Journalism, some people swear Barta carries the spirit of a Mongolian warrior: unstoppable and fearless. Others say that Barta is somehow capable of conquering the world and knitting a sweater at the same time.
Barta says she finds something new to love in every edition of The Scroll. Sometimes, it is the color theme and sometimes the blurbs, but most of the time, it is the contributors. She loves getting to see the team's personality shift each year, discovering their attitudes, their humor, and the kinds of stories they naturally gravitate toward. For her, that evolving voice is what makes The Scroll feel alive. Barta’s favorite part of being editor is getting to see what every contributor to the scroll writes, and that feeling at the end of the month when everything comes together.
Next year, Barta will head to the University of Alaska Fairbanks to study Journalism, Environmental Science, and Rural Teaching-- a combination that feels perfectly tailored to her curiosity and grit. She is also hoping to apprentice at Denali National Park, turning her love of the natural world into real work that matters. When she looks back on high school, Barta says the people were both her favorite and the most challenging part. They were, in her words, "both the best and the worst part of this place", which feels like the most honest senior-year wisdom anyone could offer.
Barta's relationship with music is central to who she is, shaping her moods, her humor, and even her ambitions. She speaks openly-- and with notable intensity-- about her admiration for Hozier, saying that no one should let her anywhere near him. When she follows that with the pointed warning, "If I catch that man..." it lands somewhere between a threat and a love letter. Her listening habits reflect a broad, eclectic range. On any given day, she moves from Weezer to Radiohead to Metallica to Alice in Chains, a rotation that mirrors her blend of nostalgia, curiosity, and unpredictability.
Her joy and laughter will be missed in the classroom, but we know she will do wonderful feats in her life. To leave you with one piece of advice, Barta says, “Swag it out, man.”
