In this article, Kenlee shines a spotlight on the seniors and how the school chose to both sadly and happily send them off.
Our beloved seniors have said their goodbyes and now enter the real world. Grants Pass High School annually celebrates our graduating class with a senior send-off and a final assembly. The pathways that each student has chosen vary uniquely. No matter where each person decides to go, change is guaranteed. Highlights of achievements, good memories, and the impact that the seniors have made at this school will be cherished.
Students submit their formal choice for after-graduation plans to Grants Pass High School, and are recognized on Decision Day. The seniors gather around with staff on Mel Ingram Field with their fellow students at their chosen table. Each table represents a specific college, the military, or students entering the workforce via internship or career. A staff member announces and celebrates each senior by reading the names of those presented at each table. On May 21, 2026, students were invited to learn about their peers' choices. Families of seniors watched as their children experienced a milestone. The majority of graduates will be staying close to home, as most students gathered into groups representing Oregon colleges.
High school student photographers were seen filming creative videos of the seniors by having them walk up to the camera and write their decision on clear film with a marker. It was rather sentimental. As seniors hugged their friends and their high school years goodbye, tears were shed. An anonymous Grants Pass High School student said it "made me feel excited to be in their position one day. I am excited to get out of here." This day is not only important to the seniors, but it also showcases how far education has taken each student. The variety of passions and places represents the diverse student body that Grants Pass High School has formed.
The last assembly of this school year, on Fri., May 22, was also dedicated to the moving on of GPHS seniors. Fun games involved senior participation in the famous bungee run, in which selected girls and boys from the senior classes competed to dress their teachers best. The crowd was in an uproar of cheering and laughter from the competitors falling back in ridiculous ways. Teachers then gave their best fashion show strut to the senior section, allowing them to choose the best-dressed pair. Naturally, the balloon game was also featured, in which students have to jump over hurdles, sprinting to pop balloons on their peers' laps, making for an interesting show.
Administrative shoutouts called out achievements of the 2026 class, ranging from music, sports, and academic awards. Not only did students gain recognition, but teachers of the year were also announced. Student votes seemed to favor the science department, as Mr. Belcher and Mr. Herzog were called to the floor. Mr.Belcher reports that he feels "grateful and humble. I have learned more from my students than they have from me." At the end of the assembly, a randomized selection of two students won TVs. They were caught by surprise and went home with a new screen.
Finally, as the seniors departed, they said their final farewells to their high school experiences. A tunnel created by beloved staff and teachers was full of hugs, high-fives, and kind words for the leaving seniors. Of course, the group had to leave with the song "Landslide" in the background, which was more said than sung by fellow teachers and staff.
The class of 2026 will be dearly missed by their teachers, support staff, and peers. A lasting impression has been left on Grants Pass High School by the seniors' unique personalities and funny memories. Good luck, seniors. You will be just fine!
