In this article, Kenlee talks about good news around the world and in Grants Pass.
Every animal lover wishes it were possible to save every animal out there from both neglect and abuse. A 90-year-old English woman has made that attempt. She has saved over 10,000 animals from poor situations. This woman, Barby Keel, has owned her animal sanctuary in Sussex for 54 years now. Keel reports that it all started when she promised to watch a British army soldier’s dog while he was deployed. From then on, her animal-saving journey took off. The Good News Network states that Keel had “about 40 cats, and started taking in farm animals like sheep, cows, pigs, and goats.” Now, after 20 years, she has a crew of volunteers who help her at the sanctuary, assisting many critters in need. Keel is still out doing work that most people wish they could do. She is outstanding, taking care of these animals all by herself, which takes hard work and dedication. She is a kindhearted woman who not only promotes the importance of safety and good treatment for animals but also saves them. An animal's life is just as important as a human's, so thank Keel for saving 10,000 lives.
The news has circulated, white smoke was blown through the Sistine Chapel chimney in Vatican City, and the new Pope Leo XIV has been chosen. Robert Prevost was born in Chicago and spent his years as a missionary in Peru before being elected head of the Augustinians for two terms. Vatican News reports that, in Pope Leo's earlier years, “He spent his childhood and adolescence with his family and studied first at the Minor Seminary of the Augistinian Fathers and then at Villanova University in Pennsylvania.” At this historic event, over 100,000 people gathered in front of St. Peter’s Basilica. The people of the city jumped in joy upon learning about the selection of the new pope. Pope Leo then delivered a moving speech, wishing peace and prosperity. Overall, the new Pope’s selection is a major historical event that is significant to the followers of the Catholic Church.
Yay! Finally, all the students can take a breath and be sent off into days of fun in the sun. Seniors will graduate, and will then be sent off to the real world. Good luck to them. After a full, long year of hard work, draining social times, and exhausting finals, it is time to kick back and relax. Whether that is swimming in the Rogue, going to Boatnik, or traveling to your dream destination, it is well deserved. Here in Grants Pass, there will be various downtown events, festivals, clubs, and volunteering opportunities. Make sure to take advantage of the Saturday Market! Hopes that the two-and-a-half-month-long break will feel like an eternity, and the Pinterest girl summer is achieved.
Keisei High School, located in Japan, has had an ongoing relationship with Grants Pass High School for multiple years, going back and forth between the United States and Japan. This was the first time that Keisie’s concert band would be flying out to Grants Pass, Oregon, to attend the Boatnik parade. Grants Pass High School has annually been marching in the Boatnik parade down Main Street, celebrating Memorial Day by playing recognizable tunes to the audience. Keisie’s brass band expresses their joy on their Instagram and TikTok pages, which only exaggerated Grant's Passe’s excitement about their stay. Dani Porterfield, a 9th-grade band student at Grants Pass High School, expressed her excitement “ to meet new people and learn about the Japanese culture.” This was the first time the Grants Pass Band intertwined their culture with another band from across the world. This event was a great opportunity for the Grants Passe’s Band and Keisei’s Band to strengthen their bond and become a more united program.
Father's Day is celebrated on June 15 and is a special holiday that recognizes fathers around the world and the importance of a dad in a child's life. Child Physco Therapy states that, for adolescents, “Dads really do matter. Children need fathers-just as they need mothers-to love them, to be interested in them and to respond to their needs, making them feel valued and understood.” This day does not have the huge expectations of gifting your father a Rolex or his dream car. It is more focused on showing fathers their importance and thanking them for everything they have sacrificed and done. Whether this is telling a father how appreciative you are of him or making a sentimental homemade card. This holiday is inclusive to all ages, whether that means a child spending a day at the park with their dad or an adult taking their dad out to lunch. Father's Day is equally as important as any other holiday, so do not forget to thank a father or a father figure on June 15.
That wraps up the end of our 2025 school year. Thanks to any students for reading my column, and hopefully enjoying it. With the assurance of my friends, good news has brought some positive events to light and given a more optimistic outlook on the world. Have a great summer!
