In this article, Audrey will explain the role of the United States presidential cabinet and introduce members of various appointed positions.
The president of the United States serves as the primary leadership position in the country and fills many roles including chief of state, chief executive, chief administrator, chief diplomat, commander-in-chief, chief legislator, chief of party, and chief citizen. However, to manage all of these positions efficiently, the president is able to appoint people to be advisors and managers of all of these different areas, so that they may be more attentive overseers over a specific area of focus. All of the positions of the executive cabinet are appointed by the president but approved by the Senate. Donald J. Trump will be back in the White House on Jan. 2024. However, he was able to begin building his cabinet as soon as the election was secured.
The first ever United States presidential cabinet was assembled by the first president, George Washington, who helped start the process of presidents appointing advisors and the Senate approving these positions. His cabinet consisted of a secretary of state, Thomas Jefferson; a secretary of treasury, Alexander Hamilton; a secretary of war, Henry Knox; and an attorney general, Edmund Randolph. The positions of the cabinet have since expanded to fit what the president finds essential to the country over time. Currently, the categories of the executive department include the vice president, secretaries of agriculture, commerce, defense, education, energy, health and human services, homeland security, housing and urban development, interior, labor, state, transportation, treasury, and veterans affairs, the attorney general, and ambassadors.
The vice president of the United States is supposed to be prepared to become president at a moment's notice if something were to happen to the president. The vice president is the overseer of the U.S. Senate and may make the tie-breaking vote, in situations where that occurs. Trump chose Senator of Ohio, J.D. Vance to be his running mate for the 2024 presidential election. Vance will be the youngest vice president thus far in American history. In an interview with Virginia Tech, public relations professor and political campaign expert Cayce Myers stated, “Vance has the ability to campaign effectively in those states, especially among working-class voters who can deliver those states to Trump." This could be seen as Trump choosing Vance, in part, to receive votes from the Midwestern states and appeal to younger, working, middle-class residents. Something fascinating about Donald Trump choosing J.D. Vance as his running mate is that J.D. Vance had spoken out against Trump many times during the 2016 election, referring to himself as a “Never Trump guy”. However, whether it was for strategy or out of forgiveness and respect, Trump did ultimately choose Vance, despite full knowledge of these prior statements.
Trump has appointed Florida Senator Marco Rubio to serve as secretary of state. The secretary of state services as chief diplomat and advisor in political affairs. Rubio is opposed to continuing the war in Ukraine, as it takes up American resources, and said in an interview with the BBC, "But at the end of the day, what we are funding here is a stalemate war, and it needs to be brought to a conclusion, or that country is going to be set back 100 years." Furthermore, Rubio sees China as a huge threat to the United States, and believes that the U.S. needs to become less reliant on China for manufacturing, rejecting Beijing’s “Made in China 2025 Plan”. Additionally, Rubio is opposed to a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip as he is a strong supporter of Israel, stating that Israel’s only motive for fighting this war is "to destroy the terrorist organization so it may never threaten the people of Israel again." He has labeled Iran as a “terrorist regime” and he believes that Israel needs to respond to these attacks, saying that "Israel should respond to Iran the way the U.S. would respond if some country launched 180 missiles at us.”
The secretary of defense is the overseer of the U.S. Department of Defense and the Pentagon, and acts as the principal defense and policy maker. It is one of the most important government roles, given that the United States military budget is nearly $900 billion. The position calls for national security decisions, and requires the leadership of 2.9 million civilians and military service members who work for the U.S. Defense Department across the world. Trump has appointed Pete Hegseth, who had worked as a television presenter for Fox News as a political commentator for the later half of his career. He is the author of many political books, including War on Warriors and The Battle of the American Mind. Pete Hegseth has had military experience; after graduation from Princeton in 2003, he joined the Minnesota National Guard, where he served in bases in Cuba, Smairia, Baghdad, and Afghanistan-- where he served as a Civil-Military operations expert.
The attorney general is different from the other positions in the cabinet, as they do not oversee departments. Instead, they offer legal advice to the president when dealing with affairs and represent the United States in legal matters. Trump’s first pick for attorney general was Florida Congressman Matta Gatz, who withdrew from consideration for the role after accusations of drug usage and sexual misconduct accusations, which he denied. Trump then appointed Pam Bondi, Florida’s first female attorney general, to take the position. In her time as attorney general of Florida, she tightened state laws regarding sex trafficking and adopted Arizona’s “Show me your papers” immigration law. Bondi was also the attorney who represented Trump during his first impeachment trial and served as the first administration member of his Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission.
Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy have been appointed by Trump to lead the Department of Government Efficiency. Musk has claimed that he thinks it is possible to cut “at least $2 trillion” dollars (30% of expenses) from U.S. spending. Since Musk considers defense and social security mandatory, the majority of the cuts would be from “dictionary spending”, which includes education, transportation, training, employment, and social services. Elon Musk has not specified the timeframe in which he plans to make these financial cuts-- whether it would be within the year or within the four-year term.
Robert F. Kennedy, who campaigned for president during the 2024 election, but dropped out of the race to endorse Trump, has been appointed as overseer of the Department of Health Agency. RFK is the nephew of former President John F. Kennedy and an environmental lawyer, who has little to no experience in the medical field. He is strongly opposed to processed food, believing that these foods are increasing the severity of the obesity epidemic. Additionally, he has denied claims that he is anti-vaccine, although he wants more research in the field, and he is known to be strongly concerned with the fluoride found in the American water supply.
Ambassadors represent the United States when negotiating agreements, holding diplomatic meetings, protecting the citizens, and managing trade and investment agreements. There are roughly 217 Ambassadors in the United States, representing various countries. There are a few notable ambassador appointments.
The ambassador to Isreal choice is Mike Huckabee, a Baptist minister, political commentator, the former governor of Arkansas, and a strong supporter of Israel. Huckabee would be in charge of overseeing attempts to bring peace to the Middle East and strengthening the Abraham Accords. Huckabee has stated that he believes this is a war rooted in worldview: “That’s when it really hit me that we’re not dealing with an issue that is political, social, economic, or geographical...we’re dealing with an issue that is spiritual. This is evil—the worst level of evil that exists on our planet today, we saw on October 7th.”
Another notable ambassador selection includes Elise Stefanik, who has served on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence to serve as the Ambassador of the United Kingdom. Danny Danon, representative of Israel to the United Nations, has said he "looks forward to working closely with Elise Stefanik on tackling malicious lies at the UN advanced by hostile nations while staying unswervingly committed to truth and justice."
All of the presidential nominations for cabinet must be approved by the Senate before taking office, although it is not typical for the Senate to turn down any nominations (still very possible). The process for approving cabinet members is typically a slow process, and many decisions will not be made until spring. However, Trump and Vance will be back in the White House in Jan. 2025.
