This month, Rylie Revercomb will talk about the top three movies during the Christmas season.
The Christmas season has sadly come to an end. However, snow is not on the ground yet, and many people still want to hang onto the season of Christmas until the cold weather is gone. After all, Christmas is not over until we have had our traditional snow day. Not to worry: there are plenty of other Christmas traditions people can do during this time that do not involve playing in the snow. Maybe your family could continue reading The Night Before Christmas on occasion, or maybe you could continue to match pajamas. There are also hot cocoa days. Maybe you could extend the Christmas season by sitting down and watching your favorite holiday movies. Home Alone… The Santa Clause. There are honestly too many to choose from but, in honor of the season that still lacks snow, this article will dive into some of the most classic Christmas movies to watch this year. Bundle up, grab some hot cocoa, and get into your best PJs-- It’s time for the TOP THREE CHRISTMAS MOVIES!
Ah, yes, everyone’s favorite movie about an eight-year-old kid who gets ditched by his family during the busiest time of the year. It seems like Kevin McCallister was every kid’s idol growing up. As kids, we all assumed that if we were home alone and fending off the house from burglars, then we would be able to easily make the traps that Kevin creates AND even do better. Now, we realize we would have instead been crying under our beds… BUT NO MATTER. Home Alone is still one of the most popular Christmas movies, even though it came out 34 years ago. Yeah, the popularity still stretches out even now. The film was a hit then, and it is still one of the most picked movies now. It is even talked about after the holiday season. Earlier last summer, chronically online millennials were freaking out about the grocery haul scene during the movie, where Kevin pulls up his big-boy pants and heads out to buy some food for the very first time. The talk about the movie was about the price of the groceries in 1990-- then, Kevin’s haul of milk, orange juice, laundry detergent, and more only cost $19.83 and, according to food blog AllRecipes, “Today… the same items would cost a whopping $63.73.” The internet went crazy over this, which even led to some people watching the movie ahead of their usual schedule. Not only is Home Alone popular because of the grocery fiasco, but it is also just a loveable and heartfelt Christmas movie. It hits audiences right in the feels in the best way possible, like all good movies do. The movie was so good that, within the next 34 years to come, it got five sequels. However, only the second movie is accepted by fans since it is the only sequel with Kevin in it. Despite what you may think about its sequels, though, one cannot argue that Home Alone is a timeless classic and holiday favorite year-round… After all, who doesn’t love-- KEVIN?!
“What are you talking about? Everybody likes Denny’s. It’s an American Institution.” Sure, that might not sound like it is from a famous Christmas movie, but anyone who has watched The Santa Clause could recognize the infamous Denny’s scene. Scott Calvin was definitely not worthy of Father of the Year at the beginning of the film-- burning Christmas dinner, almost telling his kid Santa is not real, being late to pick up his kid in the first place, not being the jolliest guy on the street… the list goes on. So, when Santa wakes Scott up in the middle of the night and meets an untimely demise, he is frustrated-- even more so when he finds out that, by putting on the Santa suit and delivering presents, he also agreed to a hidden Santa Clause- (Yes, there is a reason for the weird spelling,) and he is forced to become the next Saint Nick. The movie is hilarious, if we are being honest. Scott slowly becomes plumper, older, jollier, and hungrier; morphing into the Santa that we have come to recognize from Coca-Cola billboards and storybooks. His son becomes completely obsessed with the North Pole and Santa after being with his Dad when he first donned the red suit. This leads to some problems with his mom, stepdad Neil, and, later, even the police. It is a typical heartfelt movie for the holidays, and one that will most certainly be enjoyed still for many years to come. I just would not expect Santa to come crashing down on your roof this Christmas.
You’ll shoot your eye out! Ralphie is, perhaps, the least loveable of these Christmas protagonists. He is whiny, a bit bratty, and constantly gets himself in the most sticky of situations. However, even though he is probably the most annoying kid to grace your TV during the holiday season, it is a crime to not include A Christmas Story in this Top Three List. The movie is a classic tale about a kid who wants something desperately for Christmas and does everything he can to turn the table and get that dang present on Christmas Day. Ralphie gets into all sorts of trouble, and his friends do, too: one kid is stuck with his tongue to a pole for an hour, Ralphie's father gets a suggestive leg lamp as a prize, the family's Christmas Day feast is ruined and they eat at an Asian restaurant (in a pretty racist scene), and Ralphie is constantly told by multiple adults that he’ll shoot his eye out. That is why he can’t get that oh-so-desired Red Ryder BB gun. The thing is, the movie wasn’t always that popular. It started out as a low-budget fluke, and wasn’t expected to make much or become that popular. However, the audience at the time quickly fell in love with it. Vanity Fair explains that this is because “We suddenly had a new kind of Christmas movie, one that acknowledged— even relished— the 'unbridled avarice', the commercialism, the disappointments, the hurt feelings, and all-around bad luck that, in reality, often define the merry season.” In other words, it was the most real Christmas movie of its time, and actually made sense. That is what makes it such a classic-- that and the absolutely stupid charm of its humor.
There ya have it. The Top Three Christmas Movies. These have been near the top, the most memorable of a bunch of Christmas productions, for years. However, there are plenty of others that also deserve honorable mentions, including The Grinch, The Polar Express, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, and Elf. Of course, there are more than that, and it doesn’t matter what movie you watch… because truly, just watching a movie during the Christmas season is magical enough. So... Merry Year-Round Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
