February is a month of celebrating love and appreciation. Many exciting things are happening this month with Valentine's Day, the celebration of Black History Month, and the leap year! There is no better way to celebrate love than to appreciate the Good News happening currently around the world.
Our first piece of Good News comes from the U.S. Department of Defense. The U.S. Department of Defense has an annual project, “Operation Christmas Drop.” Money and gifts are raised and donated by volunteers. The Airforce then works with volunteers to drop the gifts and other supplies down to Islanders. More than 50 different islands in the Pacific are benefactors of Operation Christmas Drop. According to the Andersen Air Force Base, “Operation Christmas Drop is the Department of Defense’s longest-running humanitarian airlift operation. The tradition began during the Christmas season in 1952 when a B-29 Superfortress aircrew saw islanders waving at them from the island... In the spirit of Christmas, the aircrew dropped a bundle of supplies attached to a parachute to the islanders below”. This is a very special longstanding tradition because it gives aid and support to people in need. The U.S. Military plays a role in giving some joy to many families and children.
The last piece of Good News comes from a college student in California. Joanna Maniti is a student at USC Marshall. She went on a mission trip to the Philippines in high school and that sparked a passion for children in need on the island. According to Ava Satterfield with the Daily Trojan, “She decided then that she needed to do more, and used her USC education to start her own nonprofit in 2020 to improve the lives of orphans in the Philippines.” She founded “Cherished Hearts International” and partnered with orphanages to begin to help bring better housing, food, and education to Orphans in the Philippines. According to the Philippines Orphanage Organization, “The number of orphans in the Philippines is now estimated to be over 2,000,000!” This number is very high and growing. These children need support. It is amazing to see people take charge to change the world. Joanna is an incredible example of what it means to love others.
It is important to look for the good in life especially when it seems like there is not much to find. Life is not always bleak. Love is something that helps to bring people together and shows us how good life can be and love is all around. There are so many stories and experiences which prove that there is Good News all around!
