Research:
Watch one or both of the videos to see traditional method of making an Mandala.
A mandala is defined as a circular design or a symmetrical design. The mandala has its roots in Buddhist and Hindu culture/religion. Mandala in when translated into English means circle and they are meant to symbolically represent the universe. Monks make mandalas from chalk. The create detailed designs that radiate or begin at the center of the circle. It takes the monks many days to make the mandala. When it is finished instead of trying to keep it they gently brush it up, to represent the impermanence of the universe. Impermanence means that everything is constantly changing and the monks understand and know that change is okay. Thus they are at peace with not trying to keep the mandala. In recent years coloring and creating mandalas has become very popular around the world. I hope we create our mandalas in a respectful manner and appreciate this beautiful and meditative art form.
Vocabulary:
Radial- Parts of the object or picture radiate from a central point.
Symmetry: Creating balance by arranging elements on either side of the center of the object or picture in an equally weighted manner.
There are two ways you can emulate, create your own version, of a mandala at home. Either you can draw a mandala or you can go outside and use nature to make a mandala. Below will be directions for both.
The first way you can create a mandala is by going outside to your backyard and collecting nature. For examples find leaves, rocks, flower petals, and sticks and use these as your art materials to create a mandala. To the right you will find a nature mandala that I created in my backyard underneath it is another example made by someone else.
Start with a center object, I used a rock.
Then continue to create different circular layers. Use the same materials on the same layers or rings. This will help you achieve radial symmetry.
When you are finished take a picture and remember to share it with me. I would love to add your work to our online gallery.
