BFF activities are recommended for use in Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 instruction throughout Granite classrooms.
The BFF activities are designed to help students visualize how these strategies work and provide practice in using them. These strategies develop number sense and flexibility which allows students to use their math fact understanding to solve problems with larger numbers.

Don't overscaffold -
It's good for students to struggle.
There are no daily lesson plans. Become familiar with how to facilitate each type of activity and determine which activity you will do each day. Use the Week at a Glance Ideas Chart below (and in the Facilitator's Guide) for help in planning each lesson string. Each lesson string should last a week (or 2).

REMEMBER:
Strategies are meant to be flexible. Don't turn these strategies into an algorithm (a set of steps to follow).
Make the math visible using manipulatives, models, pictures, etc. to build conceptual understanding and make connections.
7 significant strategies are described in Chapter 4 of “Figuring Out Fluency in Mathematics Teaching and Learning” by Jennifer Bay-Williams and John J. SanGiovani. There are other strategies to use with computation and procedural fluency, but these 7 strategies are extremely useful and scalable - meaning they can be used with larger numbers and other situations like decimals and fractions. It is highly recommended to teach these strategies and help students practice using them in both BFF activities and Tier 1 instruction.

We use the 3 Year Pacing Guide OPTION A which focuses on foundational facts in Kinder, derived facts in 2nd and all facts in 1st.

Set A: Grade 3 Tier 1 for foundational multiplication skills (has 3-Act Math Task)
Set B: Grades 4 & 5 Tier 1 for more complex multiplication with comparisons and remainders (has Open Middle Problems)
