Ceramics Courses with Ms. Coxworth
A.P. Art History 11, 12, Year
Do you enjoy looking at art? Do you love to travel? In AP Art History we learn about great art created throughout history and from all parts of the world. College credit (6 credits in most Utah Universities) can be earned by those who complete the class and pass the AP exam with a satisfactory score. Artistic ability is not required so if you enjoy art, but do not feel like you would enjoy a studio art class this is the course for you. Students will have the opportunity to visit local art museums and a trip to San Francisco in March. This class will be a highlight of your high school experience. Class fee is not to exceed $20.
Drawing 3-4/Art 1020 (CE) 9-12 Year
This is a course designed to build and reinforce skills and techniques learned in the Drawing 1-2 class. Drawing 3 (taught 1st semester) is a concurrent enrollment college class. Students 9th to 12th grade can earn 3 semester hours of college credit. Particular attention is given to portrait and figure drawing, and the development of the particular interests of each student. In Drawing 4 students will choose their own subject matter while gaining proficiency in various medias such as pen and ink, digital, prismacolor, and other various techniques. Prerequisites: Foundations (9th grade advanced art) or Drawing 1 (high school level). Fee not to exceed $40 per semester.
Intermediate Painting 3-4 10 - 12 Semester or Year
This course is for students who have taken a beginning painting and would like to further their painting skill in the paint of their choice Students have the opportunity to practice different techniques as well as pursue their own artistic interests. Students who take this course in conjunction with the AP Studio Art course can use their work to add to their portfolios. Prerequisite: Beginning Painting 1-2. Class fee is not to exceed $50 per semester.
Advanced Drawing 5-6 / Painting 5-6 10 - 12 Semester or Year
This course is taken in conjunction with the AP Studio Art course to allow for extended time to work on an AP portfolio. This course is designed to reinforce knowledge and skills learned in the Painting and Drawing classes. Students will have the option to work any medium, and will have the opportunity to practice different techniques as well as pursue their own artistic interests. Prerequisite: Must be enrolled in AP Studio Art.
AP Studio Art and Design 11-12 Year
In this class you will be given the freedom to use your art skills to create a portfolio of work that interests you. If you just want to experience making exceptional art, or get a jump start on a career as an artist/designer AP Studio Art is the best class for you. The year will be spent creating original works of art to submit for AP credit, scholarships, art shows, and college applications. Students will create a professional portfolio that exhibits a body of work chosen and developed by each student that expresses their interests, ideas, and favorite materials. Students can take the class multiple years and can create any of the three types of portfolios.
AP Studio 2D Design – for those interested in 2D design such as graphic artists, photographers, illustrators, game/character design, fashion/interior design, web/game designers, etc.
AP Studio 3D Design – For those interested in 3D design such as sculptors, architecture, computer design, Potters, etc.
AP Studio Drawing – For those interested in drawing such as illustrators, fine/gallery artists, etc.
Class fee is not to exceed $50 per semester.
Beginning Painting Oil 9-12 semester
This course is an introductory course to painting with oil based paints. Students will learn how to use and create original paintings in oil. Students will work in a variety of techniques and with a variety of subject matter. Prerequisite: Drawing 1 or Art Foundations 1. Class fee is not to exceed $50. Students must have their own brushes and disposable palette.
Beginning Painting Watercolor 9-12 semester
This course is an introductory course to painting with water based paints. Students will learn how to use and create original paintings in watercolor. Students will work in a variety of techniques and with a variety of subject matter. Prerequisite: Drawing 1 or Art Foundations 1. Class fee is not to exceed $40. Students must have their own brushes.
Beginning Drawing 1-2 9-12 Drawing 1: semester Drawing 2: semester Drawing 1-2: yearlong
This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of drawing. Students will learn basic elements of art and principles of design, how to break complex objects into simple shapes, drawing in perspective, value and shading techniques, and color theory. Beginning Drawing (1) is a semester-long course, Drawing 1-2 is a year-long course that will integrate the principles of beginning drawing into a personal drawing style through exposure to a variety of structured drawing techniques and assignments. Must have Beginning Drawing credit prior to taking Intermediate Drawing (Drawing-2). Drawing 1-2 is highly recommended for any students interested in taking AP Studio Art.
Exploring Art/Art 1010 (CE) 10-12 semester
Looking for art credits but feel your art skills are lacking. This course gives students a broad overview of art and a hands-on opportunity to try several forms of art in a non-judgemental atmosphere. Students will develop an appreciation of the visual arts by investigating the elements and principles of art, art criticism, art production, and the history of art. Requires students to take notes during lecture and identify works of arts and describe their significance in writing, understanding of skills will be assessed by unit tests and a final presentation.
Beginning 3D Design 9-12 semester
A fundamental course with an emphasis on means of construction, analysis of materials and structural examinations that support conceptual development of 3 dimensional art. Emphasis placed on characterizing the elements and principles of design and how they each integrate to form fully realized works of 3D art. Students will develop projects using a variety of materials and methods.
Intermediate 3D Design 9-12 semester
This course is for students who have taken Beginning 3D Design. In this one semester course, the elements and principles of 3-D design are studied and utilized to create art that exists in three dimensions. A variety of sculptural processes will be used to create artwork based on a theme or concept. The ability to generate original solutions to design problems will require basic drawing skills, creative thinking and artistic exploration of possible approaches. Weekly sketchbook assignments that require drawing, reflection and research are part of the curriculum.
Beginning Ceramics 1 grades 9-12
This is a one semester introductory course in ceramics. This is a process based class where students will learn how to create as well as appreciate expressive, three dimensional clay forms. In this hands-on learning environment, students will be introduced to hand-building techniques like pinching, coiling, slab work, sculpting, and basic pottery wheel work.
Beginning Ceramics 2 grades 9-12
This one semester course is for students who have taken ceramics level 1.This is a process based class where students will expand on the techniques learned in level 1 to make more complex ceramic forms and surface finishes. Half of the ceramic projects will be pottery wheel focused.
Intermediate Ceramics 3-4 grades 10-12
This course is for students who have taken ceramics level 1 and 2. Students will further develop their ceramic skill set through both teacher directed and choice based practice and projects.
Advanced Ceramics 5-6 grades 11-12
This course is for students who have taken ceramics level 1,2,3, and 4. In this class students will make complex works of art while developing their favorite ceramic techniques.
