What is a concussion?
According to the CDC, A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury—or TBI—caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells.
Supporting a student recovering from a concussion requires a collaborative approach among school professionals, health care providers and parents as the student may need accommodations that address both the classroom and athletics during recovery.
We require a Return to Learn plan from your child's medical provider that gives guidance and recommendation on how to care for students in an academic setting once they return to school.
For middle and high school athletes, the school's Athletic Trainer can assist in completing the NCHSAA Return to Play Protocol, ensuring your child is properly monitored and evaluated before resuming participation in athletics.
