School Nursing, a specialized practice of nursing, protects and promotes student health, facilitates optimal development, and advances academic success. School nurses, grounded in ethical and evidence-based practice, are leaders who bridge health care and education, provide care coordination, advocate for quality student-centered care, and collaborate to design systems that allow individuals and communities to develop their full potential (National Association of School Nurses, 2022, www.nasn.org).

School nurses are considered independent, front-line health care providers, serving as the bridge between the health care and education systems. School nurses serve as public health sentinels for schools as well as their communities. For many children living in or near poverty, the school nurse may be the only health care professional they access regularly. School nurses are essential in infectious disease surveillance, identification and intervention for student physical and mental health concerns, health screenings, school-located vaccinations and immunization compliance efforts (NASN, 2022, www.nasn.org).

Graham County  Schools employs Registered Nurses at each campus to assist with your student's medical needs while at school.  We believe that a healthy student learns better. Our goal is to assist your student with medical concerns so he or she will succeed academically. We are thankful for the opportunity to serve you and your family.

Health Conditions? Let us know.

It is the parent's responsibility to inform the school nurse, child's teacher, or principal if there are medical conditions that require special measures such as an Emergency Action Plan (EAP), dietary or activity restrictions, or medications during school hours for the student. Health Forms are sent home annually and are available online or from the school at any time during the school year in the event health changes occur or new health diagnoses are made.

For health-related questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the appropriate Nursing Department staff using the contact information at the top of this page.
