Ms. Marchefka grew up in Greenfield and earned her B.A. from Smith College, a certificate in Outdoor Leadership from Greenfield Community College, and her Masters in Science Education from the University of Massachusetts. She received the Grinspoon Award for Excellence in teaching in 2015. This year will be her 14th year teaching. She enjoys hiking, running, and spending time with friends and family.
I should start by saying that I have the best job in the world! I love coming to school every day and working with this age group. Our classrooms at Greenfield Middle School are filled with laughter, productive struggle, socializing, and questioning. Students at this age begin to see the world in new ways and start to notice the world beyond themselves. Being a part of a young person's journey as they begin to see the world in new ways is incredibly rewarding!
First of all, I cannot believe how amazing well students were able to transition to remote learning this year! Our 5th graders showed incredible kindness and compassion for one another (and their teachers!) as we all navigated a new learning environment.
My favorite memory was when students created characters that designed and built a space colony on Mars. Each student created a character that would travel to Mars and establish shelters, farms, water collection, and transportation on the red planet. Students took what they were learning in Science class and applying it to their designs and plans. The Mars groups successfully launched and landed on Mars and will forever live on in our memories!
