Feature Film Info for 2022-2023

Feature film use for educational/instructional purposes in the classroom does not require a public performance license.

Feature film use for entertainment/fundraising purposes DOES require a Public Performance license.

  • TVDSB has a feature film (public performance) license agreement with Criterion Pictures for the 2022-2023 school year. To see if a title is covered by the Criterion license you can search the movie title here: http://www.criterionpic.com/cpl/qsearch.htx

    • Some of the movies are available via streaming in Insignia /Learn360.

      • To browse a list of these titles in Insignia,

        • make sure you are logged in;

        • go to Resource Services (2nd from the top in the drop down list);

        • enter feature films in the keyword search;

        • click on the "Streamed Videos" tab to see the streaming results.

    • Not all movies are covered by the Criterion license (nor are all appropriate).

    • Teachers must use their professional judgement to determine whether the content is suitable for the audience/classroom.

    • Once you know the movie is covered

      • IF you show the movie from a DVD for entertainment/fundraising purposes, you must report it online at http://www.criterionpic.com/034/lcl_ppa.html using client #9502801.

      • If you are showing it (streaming) from Insignia / Learn360 (you must use Google Chrome to stream on a school computer) there is no need to report (however, there may be buffering issues).

      • Only teachers have access to feature films in Insignia/Learn360 but they can be shared with students via Google Classroom or create and share with students via a playlist (no login is needed to access videos when shared via a playlist url). If you would like me to confirm if we have the streaming rights for a Criterion title, just let me know.

Note, feature films (videos, tv shows, etc.) available on Netflix Canada, Google Play, iTunes/Apple, etc. are not intended for public performance, which includes use in schools. User licences with these streaming services are intended for individual personal use, not for public performance in educational settings. To avoid infringing copyright of the provider and creator and breaking the terms of use with the service provider, these services are not to be used in schools.

Also continuing this year: Schools can access one free pre-release DVD title this year (note: shipping/handling charges extra) and they can contact Debbie Rains at Criterion to order the pre-release movie (debbie.rains@anuvu.com or 1-800-565-1996 X 240). Here is the link to their release schedule (refer to Criterion Date column) http://www.criterionpic.com/CPL/lcl_releaseschedule_new.html

TVDSB does not have a feature film license with Audio Cine Films (ACF) and if you would like to show a movie represented by ACF for entertainment/fundraising purposes then a license needs to be secured by the organizing party. To see if a movie is represented by ACF you can do a title search here (top right corner) http://acf-film.com/en/index.php. For example, ACF represents Disney and in order to show a Disney film for entertainment/fundraising you would need a license from ACF which can be purchased via the webstore. To give you an example of pricing, the base price for a Disney movie for a single presentation is approximately $200.00 (FTE based).
