Learning Environment

Our Classroom Learning Environment

The classroom should be a positive learning environment for everyone. The Royal Roads Code of Conduct, as well as any other expectations presented by the Principal (Mrs. Pulley) or Vice Principal (Mrs. Carne), will be in place (please be sure that you review these expectations at home). In addition, students are expected to follow our community agreements that every person in our classroom will follow. These community agreements will be created in class during the first week of school and will centre around kindness and respect for self, others, and the learning environment.

There will be different levels of interaction among the students in our classroom depending on the activity. Students will have the opportunity to be active listeners, independent workers, and there will be many opportunities for group sharing and collaboration. Students are reminded that instructional time is for learning, not socializing about things that do not pertain to the topic being studied. All attention should be given to the speaker, whether it is a teacher, guest, administrator or peer.

Physical Education/Outdoor Education

Phys Ed. this year will be indoors and outdoors. Students should ensure they wear comfortable clothes and proper running shoes to participate. It is recommended that students keep a gym bag with deodorant and running shoes at school. Please do not send perfume sprays to school.

Students should endeavour to bring their Phys. Ed clothes home every Friday to clean them and return them to school each Monday.

Classroom Supplies

Students are encouraged to bring their own school supplies (not to be shared) to school for their own personal use. Please note that this is just a suggested list and is not mandatory. If they would like to bring supplies in for personal use, it would be helpful to have the following items:

Cell Phones

During the 2023-2024 school year, we have a policy regarding cell phone usage at Royal Roads. We are well aware that many Intermediate students have their own cell phones, but at school there will not be a time that these will be able to be used. Students will not be permitted to use cell phones in the school yard, hallways, at breaks, or transitions. Students will not be permitted to take cell phones to the public washrooms. Cell phones can only be used if a staff member has given permission.

We encourage parents to refrain from messaging students during class time as this is a distraction for the entire class and will encourage students to make use of their cell phone. If students need to message or call their parents using their cell phone, they need to do so prior to arriving at school or after the 3:30 P.M. dismissal bell. The office phone is also available at any time.

If students are found to be using their cell phones without permission during the instructional day, cell phones will be locked in the office safe until the end of the school day. If cell phones become a problem with any particular student, they may be asked to leave their device at home. Please feel free to contact the school if you have any questions regarding this matter.

Valuing Cultural Capitol

I am happy to accommodate any faith practices or ethno-cultural traditions that are important to your family, so please let me know if there is a way I can do so. In addition, feel free to let me know if there are certain aspects of the curriculum that concern you, or cause conflict with your home faith and cultural practices. The complete curriculum can be viewed on-line by clicking the button below.

Although it is no longer possible to opt-out of certain subjects, as everything we teach is the Ontario Curriculum, I am happy to accommodate how a child works with content to better reflect their own family values, ethno-cultural traditions or faith practices.

If, after reading through the curriculum documents, you have additional concerns or questions, please e-mail me and we'll set a time by phone or to virtually meet and discuss how to find a balance between your family's needs and beliefs, and my commitment to supporting our learning community.
