Homework

Ah, the question asked every school year: "How much homework will my child get?"

As we cover the curriculum this year there will be a variety of learning opportunities for students. Many of these opportunities involve inquiry and group learning, which will be done in our classroom. All students are expected to demonstrate their understanding, independently, and in-class whenever possible (i.e., "I'll do it at home later" is never acceptable.) Students with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) are also expected to demonstrate their learning, as outlined in their IEP and with the provided accommodations, independently, and in-class. Parents of students who have an IEP are strongly encouraged to be a part of the process and to get in touch with me during the first few weeks of school to discuss the plan and make changes if/where needed.

It is suggested that students set aside 70 minutes in the evening for homework. Homework includes at-home practice (that will not be graded but will ensure student success on in-class assessments), review of the day's work, or preparing for upcoming activities or assessments. Examples might include re-writing notes to improve retention, making review cards, etc. Students will not be assessed on work done at home, nor will homework be tracked.

It is expected that your child reads 30+ minutes every evening to develop their reading skills and fill out their Reading Check-In. Reading is a life skill that will benefit your child long after they leave Royal Roads Public School. You will not see extra "busy" worksheets coming home. "Busy" work is never assigned in Buis 7 nor is it assessed. On occasion, you may see unfinished classwork or projects coming home to be completed, which must be completed independently. Students should visit the provided links on our class website to review concepts across subjects areas should they require, or have requested, additional opportunities to do so.

The amount of homework your child has will directly depend on how productive and focused they are in the classroom. If they use class time well, they will usually have very little to bring home. As a mother of two school-aged children, I strongly believe that family time and extracurricular activities in the evenings are valuable and that there needs to be a school/family life balance. If you consistently find that your child is spending a large part of their evening on unfinished classwork and projects or have concerns, please contact me, so we can discuss it.

Assignments will be primarily paperless and found in our Google Classroom, although there will also be paper assignments and projects handed out during class time, which should be secured in your child's binder. Please encourage your child to refer to this class website, Google Calendar, and Google Classroom consistently so that they will always know about upcoming due dates. All culminating activities, assignments and tests/quizzes will be announced early.

Students will be responsible for logging onto our Google Classroom to show their families what they have been working on, as well as getting any paper copies of assessments signed and returned to school. Our Google Classroom will have recent assessments, evaluations, tests, projects, and completed work to share with families. After reviewing the work with your student, please submit the Google Form letting me know that you have seen your child's work, send an email, or returned signed paper copies to school.
