Purified green fluorescent protein.
All O’Maley 8th graders were invited to visit Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute’s Biotechnology Academy. At the Academy, students engaged in hands-on science, toured the facility and learned about the opportunities available for GPS students and graduates.
At the Academy, students learned how to extract DNA from their cheek cells using common household items and Gatorade.
Students toured the lab space and were introduced to green fluorescent protein (GFP), a protein discovered in jellyfish that glows green under fluorescent light.
GFP has become a widely used marker in molecular biology, allowing scientists to visualize and track proteins and gene expression in living cells.
The Biotech Academy offers summer STEM enrichment for students ages 13-18. Click here for more information.
DNA successfully extracted!
The white stringy material is the DNA, rising out of the dish soap layer into the chilled isopropyl.

Beeman third graders joined us in the Science Center to explore where matter comes from. How do seeds become plants? How do bees make honeycomb? What happens to matter in a chemical reaction? These are some of the questions we tried to answer during the time we had together. Students built seed germinators, drafted geometric designs and experimented with chemical reactions to observe how matter changes.
Remnants from the seed germinator build become tutus!

West Parish fourth graders traveled to the Science Center for a morning of scientific exploration. The students brought great enthusiasm and energy for all things science.
"This was a great experience for the 4th graders. I would say all of them were fully engaged and really enjoyed being in the labs. Thank you!"- Regina Sargent, 4th grade teacher
