Dr. Joe Buttner and Dr. Mark Fregeau learning new techniques in the Science Center.
June 2024
Science Central partnered with Salem State University to provide content and instruction as part of the University's Summer Institute. Our dear friend, Dr. Joe Buttner, ran a week-long graduate course in aquaponics, and asked us to host the students in the Science Center for a day of small system building, microbiology and gram staining.
Emily and Alyssa are back in the house!
Emily and Alyssa are O'Maley alumni, joining us as student teachers during the 2021/2022 school year.

Welcome back, Beeman 5th! Working with materials supplied by MIT Sea Grant, students investigated concepts related to climate change and ocean chemistry. We looked at the amazing variety of shapes, colors, sizes and textures of the bivalves and gastropods along the Atlantic coast, the effects of increased acidity on shell structure and how carbon dioxide can change ocean acidity levels.
Students tested their folding skills making origami shells and large scale clam shells in the design lab. We look forward to running this pilot program again!
John Doyle, Education Director, looking for DNA
All O’Maley 8th graders were invited to visit Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute’s Biotechnology Academy. At the Academy, students engaged in hands-on science, toured the facility and learned about the opportunities available for GPS students and graduates.
At the Academy, students learned how to extract DNA from their cheek cells using common household items and Gatorade.
Academy staff were impressed by the students' knowledge and engagement.
The Biotech Academy offers summer STEM enrichment for students ages 13-18. Click here for more information.
DNA successfully extracted!
A large crowd of students, staff and families gathered in the Science Center to observe the solar eclipse and enjoy eclipse related activities.
So great to see everyone smiling and looking up! 😎 😎 😎
The Oreo Challenge was a big hit, with a promise of a cup of sunshine for every successful participant. Milk and cookies for everyone.

January 24, 25 and 26th 2024
All GPS 5th graders participated in O'Maley SAILS and STEM move up days this week. During their visit, 5th graders toured the building, met with guidance counselor Mary White and a panel of O'Maley students, heard a performance by the O'Maley band, 3d printed in the Design Lab, and built and raced wooden boats in the TechRoom. In addition to familiarizing students with the school, the move up days are a chance to learn more about O'Maley's core values and the unique opportunities our Science Center has to offer.
