Timeline

Unwavering support from the Gloucester Education Foundation and the Gloucester Public School District has put resources, both physical and financial, at the disposal of a dedicated teacher team and made the timeline below a reality.

2008 The Birdseye/Hammond STEM lab at O’Maley Middle School opens.

2010 Rethinking Recycling brings all of 8th grade science into the lab for the first large scale investigation series, making the connection between science classrooms and the Birdseye Hammond TechRoom.

2012 Lowe's Toolbox for Education grant awarded for development of Design Lab.

2013 Slime Lab added to the STEM Suite. MIT Edgerton funds the Sail Car Project.

2014  The Make-A-Thon. More than 60 volunteers joined us for a weekend in the O’Maley library to assemble 25 3D printers kits.

2017 O'Maley awarded MSLC grant for equipment and teacher professional development for BioLab and aquaponics project: Applied Materials Foundation awards grant for construction of partitions, cabinets and tables for the new BioLab.

2018 Teacher training in aquaponics is held in partnership with Salem State professor Dr. Joe Buttner.

2019 Funding received through the Barbara Wilson Memorial Fund establishes internship program in collaboration with Salem State University; first intern begins in January to provide scientific support and mentorship to students.

2020 The pandemic hits and precipitates a reconfiguration of the STEM suites. Locating most of the labs into a central location helps with traffic flow as Gloucester Public School students return to school for in person learning.

2021 With protocols in place around students sharing of materials, programming in the Science Center continues throughout the year, allowing in person hands on learning for O'Maley students.

2022 Brace Cove Foundation awards Gloucester Public Schools grant to fund a 2 year Science Coordinator position for the Science Center.
