Project Design in Virtual and In-Person Spaces

(Module 5)

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After working through this module, every GROW team member should be able to:

  • Brainstorm project ideas based on the partner community’s needs

  • Explore and design goals and timeline for projects with your partner

PRE-WORK (30 mins)

Do this on your own

GROW Coordinator:

  • Set up a call or e-meet with your partner contact(s). Reach out to your partner contact to set up a call if one has not already been scheduled. Use the tools below to guide you through the brainstorming process of co-create/design the projects the partner sees as beneficial.

  • Set up a call with your chapter coach to inform them on your progress. This call should take place after you have completed this module.

GROW Team Member: Review and Reflect on the below topics

Topic 1: The value of Empowering Questions

    • What are some empowering questions?

    • What are the benefits of asking empowering questions?

Topic 2: Fixed vs. Growth Mindsets

    • What are the characteristics of both? Are there pros and cons?

Reflect on how these mindsets and framing of questions.

  • Can you think of spaces/times your chapter does this well? Are there spaces were these framings can add value?

  • How does your chapter normally enter conversations with your partner? What does your chapter do well? Is there areas for improvement?

EXPLORE (15 minutes)

Introduction

This module aims to walk you through conversations with your partner as you work to clarify your goals, set time commitments and expectations, and choose your projects.

  • Review the GROW Goals as a team (of interns & partners). What ideas or hopes do you have for achieving these?

  • What does partner availability and accessibility during your GROW experience look like?

  • Look at the needs and goals of your organizations/partners: are there additional goals you would like to achieve while on GROW? (Ex: partner wants to build a relationship with the e-board)

DISCERN (45 minutes)

Brainstorming Activity

Create a list of possible projects you can work on. (Here is a blank template of the brainstorming sheet) Use the below drop-downs to assist in brainstorming depending on the space your GROW experience will be held in this year.

Virtual Space- DISCUSSION GUIDE: EXPECTATION SETTING & MODEL DESIGN

As GROW interns & partners, look at the list you’ve created. Balancing feasibility with encompassing all 3 GROW goals, which projects would you like to engage in as a GROW team?

With this in mind determine:

  • How many hours a week team members should expect to commit?

  • How many of these hours would be on live meetings vs independent work time? (Clarifying the balance between live meetings and independent work time can help applicants see if they'd be able to balance this virtual experience with other responsibilities, like work or classes)

  • Which communication platforms (email, whatsapp, facebook messenger, zoom, etc) will be used?

  • What would be the expected start & end date of the experience?

Once the cadence of the virtual GROW experience is determined:

  • Return back to the goals that you are achieving. Is anything missing?

  • Consider forms of support that you will need from HQ to accomplish your goals & communicate these to your coach. How should you go about communicating these needs for support?

  • Look at the overall time & energy commitment that this requires from all parties. Is this empowering or overwhelming? If it is the latter, dig into this. What can you cut back on?

Here is a short read from one of last years Virtual GROW Experience.

In-person Space- DISCUSSION GUIDE: EXPECTATION SETTING & MODEL DESIGN

As GROW interns & partners, look at the list you’ve created. Balancing feasibility with encompassing all 3 GROW goals, which projects would you like to engage in as a GROW team?

With this in mind determine:

We want to remind you again how vital it is to ensure your partner's voice is heard throughout these discussions.

  • How many hours a week team members should expect to commit? What does a normal internship day look like?

  • How many of these hours would be with a partner employee vs independent work time?

  • Communicate with your partner to see what on the ground projects they may need assistance with? Are there specific projects or lines of work you would like to learn more about/see?

  • What has past in-person GROW experiences looked like? Can you reach out to a past GROW team member or your partner contact?

  • Which communication platforms (email, whatsapp, facebook messenger, zoom, etc) will be used?

  • What would be the expected start & end date of the experience?

Once the cadence of the GROW experience is determined:

  • Return back to the goals that you are achieving. Is anything missing?

  • Consider forms of support that you will need from HQ to accomplish your goals & communicate these to your coach. How should you go about communicating these needs for support?

  • Look at the overall time & energy commitment that this requires from all parties. Is this empowering or overwhelming? If it is the latter, dig into this. What can you cut back on?
