Virtual tours, Home Rules, and New Normal Essential Agreements
By Ibu Ashley K-SWeeks 6 and 7 had our Reception students diving deeper into our first line of inquiry, How essential agreements contribute to shared well-being. We took students on a virtual tour of our school campus, discussed the rules set for each space, and made connections to practices we follow within our homes .
Home Rules.
During Week 6 students explored various rooms in their house and created videos explaining how and why they have rules in those spaces.
We also inquired into our “new normal” at school guided by the new signs that are around campus. We showed students pictures of these new signs via video tour and the children discussed why each sign is necessary for that particular space. Students will later choose a favorite area in the school (pool, playground, etc.), reflect, and create an essential agreement for that space to assess learning. Students practiced their critical thinking skills and showed they were principled by explaining the importance of the agreements in various places that play a role in their lives. Students explored the fundamental concepts of change, causation, and function during these activities. They identified their role concerning essential agreements, the sequence we follow when we create rules, and the consequences if we break them.
How We Organize Ourselves: Guest Speaker and Assessment of Learning
In preparation for our unit’s final weeks, Ibu Tessa created craft bags for our Reception parents to pick up at the school gate. These bags had instructions and materials to make playdough at home! Mba Eha was our guest speaker and gave virtual instructions on using our fine motor skills to create shapes and different structures with the home-made dough. Math and motoric skills were integrated into this session to help prepare the format students will have an option to choose for their summative assessment. Students will take on an architect or builder’s role to develop a space out of a material and then create an essential agreement for that space. Week 8 students planned out their materials following instructions on Seesaw.
