As part of our Sharing the Planet unit and Science Week, Year 3 students have been exploring the fascinating world of biomes and the different environments that support life on Earth.
To begin their inquiry, students took part in a provocation activity using the See, Feel, Wonder thinking routine. They observed images of different biomes, such as rainforests, deserts, grasslands, tundra, and temperate forests. Students shared what they saw, how the environments made them feel, and what they wondered about them. Their questions and observations helped spark curiosity and encouraged them to think more deeply about how plants, animals, weather, and climate are connected.
This experience also supported our Science Week focus by giving students opportunities to observe, question, discuss, and make connections like young scientists. Instead of simply learning facts, students were encouraged to investigate and develop their own questions about the world around them.
Another exciting experience was Blue Sky Day, when Year 3 students went outdoors to fly their kites. As they watched their kites move through the sky, students observed the effects of wind and air and explored how these natural forces can affect movement. The activity provided a fun, hands-on opportunity to connect science learning with a real-world experience.
Through these experiences, Year 3 students are developing their curiosity, observation, questioning, and inquiry skills while building a greater appreciation for the diverse environments and natural phenomena that are part of our shared planet.
