As we prepare to begin our second Unit of Inquiry, Who We Are, Year 1 students took part in a provocation activity to explore their current understanding of relationships and the people who are important in their lives.
Inspired by our central idea, “People’s relationships with others contribute to their well-being,” students were invited to represent the people with whom they have relationships using a medium of their choice. From clay sculptures and 3D toilet-roll people to origami, puppets, painting, drawing and writing, students had a variety of creative opportunities to express their ideas.
This open-ended experience encouraged students to share their thinking, make personal connections, and represent their relationships in meaningful ways. It also provided teachers with valuable insights into students’ prior knowledge, understandings, and perspectives, helping to guide our learning journey throughout the unit.
We look forward to discovering how our Year 1 students deepen their understanding of relationships, belonging, and well-being as we continue our inquiry into Who We Are!
Year 1 Community Dress-Up Day
Celebrating Our Community Members!
On Friday, September 18, 2026, our Year 1 students celebrated the completion of their first Unit of Inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme How We Organize Ourselves. Throughout this unit, our students have explored the roles and responsibilities of people within different communities and discovered how communities thrive when everyone contributes and works together.
To celebrate their learning, students came dressed as a community member or brought a prop or tool representing someone they had learned about. Their choices reflected the many communities they belong to, including the family community (moms, dads, and other family members), the class community (students and teachers), the school community (principals, gardeners, and other school staff), and the wider community or neighborhood (police officers, chefs, doctors, and other community helpers).
The day was filled with excitement as students proudly introduced their chosen characters and challenged their teachers to guess who they were representing! Through this engaging experience, students demonstrated they were communicators, sharing their learning and explaining their choices. They also deepened their understanding of what it means to be caring and to contribute positively to the communities around them.
It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the students’ learning, creativity, and growing appreciation of the important roles and responsibilities that help our communities thrive.
