Combines

For the 'combines' project, we have been experimenting with mixed media to create pieces inspired by Robert Rauschenberg's combine paintings. We explored the concept of incorporating everyday objects and materials into a painting

We experimented using different techniques for this project. For the first lesson, we experimented with printmaking using different kinds of materials and techniques to create images. I used a sheet of thin plastic and carved a drawing of a building i had recently visited called 'Melin Tregwynt' in Pembrokeshire. I then rolled ink onto the sheet and used a press and damp paper to create the image. I then went through the same process but added more details to the print.

On our second week on this project, we were given paper frames that we could use to create small experimental combine paintings. For the bigger frame, I decided to follow the theme of my book project, which is the paralympic games. This piece is done completely in mixed media, which is quite different to the work that I usually do. I used the smaller frames to create quite simple mixed media combines as well, using old postcards, magazine cuttings, and random materials from around the house.

In a zine workshop, we had the opportunity to use a typewriter, which I had never used before.

For the final combine I made for this project, I took inspiration from a recent family holiday to Pembrokeshire, which was beginning to feel autumnal at the time. I used paint, a map, packaging, drawings and other materials to try and capture the trip through this medium.
