International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) is celebrated every year on 23 June. It recognises the amazing achievements of women engineers and aims to inspire more girls and young women to consider engineering as a future career.
In 2026, INWED celebrates its 13th year, led by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES). The theme this year is:

Engineering is a hugely important career sector, but women are still under‑represented. In the UK, only 16.9% of engineers are women (2025 figures). Days like INWED help to change this by:
Raising awareness of engineering careers
Showing real role models and success stories
Encouraging girls to see engineering as for them
INWED is the only global platform focused entirely on celebrating women in engineering and inspiring the next generation.
Engineering is a challenging, exciting and rewarding career choice. Engineers help to:
Design sustainable cities and transport
Create new technology and smart devices
Improve healthcare, energy and the environment
There are many different types of engineering, including mechanical, electrical, software, civil, biomedical and aerospace.
