Meteorology is the study of our atmosphere, from the ground to the highest levels - where it becomes 'space'. Changes in the Earth's atmosphere are monitored, and their effects on the weather and climate are analysed and predicted.
Meteorologists collect and study data from the atmosphere and oceans to make weather forecasts and carry out research.
Keeping the public up to date with the weather is an important job. Extreme weather such as heavy snow or a heatwave can cause all sorts of problems, and weather forecasts on various media platforms can be vital during these conditions. But preparing forecasts for the media is just one part of a meteorologist's work. They also collect information and forecast the weather for airlines, shipping firms, farmers, utility companies and government services, and many meteorologists conduct climate research. Weather data from satellites is fed through sophisticated computers, using numerical modelling, to help meteorologists predict weather and climate change more accurately.
