Numeracy

Term 3 - Statistics

Probability

  • WALT Investigate situations that involve elements of chance
  • WALT compare experimental distributions with expectations from models of the possible outcomes, acknowledging variation and independence
  • WALT Use simple fractions and percentages to describe probability

Statistical Investigation

  • WALT determine appropriate variables and date collection methods
  • WALT gather, sort and display data
  • WALT detect patterns, variations, relationships and trends
  • WALT compare distributions visually
  • WALT communicate findings using appropriate displays

Statistical Literacy

  • WALT evaluate statements made by others about the findings of statistical investigations
  • WALT evaluate statements made by others about the findings of probability activities

Beginning our inquiry

As part of our statistical investigation unit, students have been asked to complete the census at the following link:

http://new.censusatschool.org.nz/take/survey.php

registration code: 59614

There are a number of questions for them to answer, which they will later base their statistical inquiry on.

Term 3 - Algebra

Equations and Expressions

  • WALT Form and solve linear equations

Patterns and Relationships

  • WALT Generalise properties of multiplication and division with whole numbers
  • WALT Use graphs, tables and rules to describe linear relationships in patterns

Term 2 - Mult/Div and Measurement

WALT Use a Variety of strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems

(work in progress)

In our learning communities we have been working together to build an understanding of multiple strategies to help us to work out math problems. Here are some examples of the work we have done together so far! We are still learning this process, so sometimes we don't get to all of the questions but we are all stepping out of our comfort zone to share our strategies with one another - making sure to listen when other people share and ask questions if we don't understand!

WALT: Identify ways of working effectively as a team

Together, we discussed how we will ensure we work effectively as a team

WALT Identify attributes of a mathematician

WALT: Understand the maths as inquiry (MAI) process

This week in class, we began looking at our maths as inquiry unit! We learned about how we can work well as a team to help each other in our maths learning and how we can all become great mathematicians.

WALT: Describe patterns of rotation, reflection and translation (beginning of geometry unit)

WALT Use a range of additive and simple multiplicative strategies with whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages to create equations
