Home Learning

Term 3

As part of our statistical investigation unit, students have been asked to complete the census at the following link:

http://new.censusatschool.org.nz/take/survey.php

registration code: 59614

There are a number of questions for them to answer, which they will later base their statistical inquiry on.

From week 5, students will be working on a "time capsule" assignment in relation to our footprints of the past unit. Students have all chosen an aspect of society that they want to investigate e.g. music, fashion, technology, transport, law, education, etc. Students are to complete a inquiry project about the history of these, how they have affected our present and make predictions about the future. I have asked students to be creative in their presentation of this project. We look forward to sharing their hard work with you all at context sharing evening.

GIS Home Learning Policy

GIS policy states that home learning is for practice and consolidation, not for new learning, so the tasks we ask you to do at home will always have been discussed and explained in class. It is your responsibility to ask for clarification if you need it. Home learning can also be found on the classroom blog or class website.

We encourage you to regularly discuss your learning with your parents or caregivers. Take books home and show off your efforts or share docs with your parents.

Each class will often have home learning directly related to current focus topics – tasks to complete, questions to research or issues to reflect on. Many of the activities we do need to be worked on over several days, using some class time and some out of school time.

If there is no set home learning, students are encouraged to:

  1. read actively, this means sitting in a quiet place, concentrating on the text/book/article. You should be practising the reading strategies you have been learning in class – predicting, making connections, asking questions etc.
  2. spend some time practising your basic facts. This may involve saying them aloud, writing them down, having someone quiz you, or all of the above. The aim is to be able to answer problems as quickly as you can. Once you have mastered one level, you move on to the next.
  • Level One – addition and subtraction facts to 20
  • Level Two – multiplication and division facts (times tables)
  • Level Three –addition and subtraction facts to 1000
  • Level Four – fractions, decimals and percentages (conversions)
  • Level Five – addition and subtraction of fractions and decimals

3. work on Mathletics. Your teacher can monitor your work and will be able to see how you are progressing.

4. Engage in some form of physical activity. If you have a sports practice or game, that counts. Otherwise you could walk, skate, dance, or play a social game of soccer or softball with friends – anything as long as it involves you moving quickly and increasing your heart rate.

These activities can help you improve your reading, basic facts and overall fitness. The expectation is that you take responsibility for your home learning and ensure that it is completed to a high standard.
