What is a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE)?
A Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) program involves practical agricultural activities performed by students outside of scheduled classroom and laboratory time. SAEs provide a method in agricultural education for students to receive real-world career experiences in an area of agriculture that they are most interested in. High school students are required to have and actively participate in and SAE of their choice and invest at least 10 hours each semester while enrolled in an agriscience course.
SAE for ALL
SAE for All was created to provide every student in agricultural education programs with access to invaluable work-based learning opportunities. This innovative delivery method ensures that no student is left behind in gaining practical, hands-on experience. Students can choose between two distinctive types of SAEs tailored to their interests and career goals: Foundational SAEs, which build essential skills and knowledge, and Immersion SAEs, which dive deeper into specialized, real-world agricultural experiences.
The Basics
All SAEs, foundational and immersion, share the same basic set of criteria for students to develop their skills. These 5 categories have been selected to ensure students are prepared, regardless of the career path or industry they pursue. Students choose their own career pathway of interest and type of SAE.
The 2 Types of SAEs
Note: Grades are merely a suggestion, not a direct correlation for all students.
Foundational SAEs provide students with opportunities to explore agriculture, develop essential skills, and begin building a strong foundation for their future career and personal success. Through activities such as career exploration, employability skills development, financial literacy, workplace safety, and agricultural literacy, students connect classroom learning to real-world experiences and begin to discover their interests, strengths, and potential career pathways. The Foundational SAE is conducted by all students in the agricultural education program, including those in a four-year sequence and those who enroll for the semester.
High School SAE Requirements:
All students enrolled in an Agriscience Class are required to complete either a Foundational or Immersion SAE. At the start of each new semester, Mr. Timm has a brief meeting to determine which route is best for each student and how they can get the most out of their experiences.
Middle School SAE Requirements:
All students enrolled in a Middle School Elective Agriscience Class are encouraged to complete either a Foundational or Immersion SAE. Based on the specific grade, students will interact with these in various ways, but each grade will complete part(s) of a Foundational SAE.
